In a groundbreaking move, Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) has announced its pivotal role as the Crown Sponsor of the African Gaming Championship, a landmark event set to redefine esports on the continent. Partnering with the African Championships Gaming League (ACGL), this initiative marks a significant stride in merging automotive innovation with digital gaming prowess.
Set against the backdrop of the University of Cape Town’s Sports Centre, the African Gaming Championship promises an exhilarating weekend from July 26 to 28, featuring intense competition among high school and university students. This invite-only tournament will showcase the talents of gamers across a range of popular titles including Fortnite, Rocket League, EA FC, Clash Royale, and GT 7.
At its heart, the championship aims to foster the burgeoning esports culture in Africa while laying a solid foundation for esports education. Toyota’s engagement in this arena reflects its evolution into a mobility-focused company, resonating with the dynamic shifts in the sporting landscape of today.

Glenn Crompton, Vice President of Marketing at TSAM, emphasizes Toyota’s forward-looking approach: “Toyota SA recognizes that the world is changing, and esports is part of that change. It’s about being where the future consumer is going to be and being part of the conversation around new platforms and new ways of engaging with people.”
Central to the championship is the Toyota Gaming Engine (TTGE), which will enhance the gaming experience with state-of-the-art sim rigs. Enthusiasts can dive into GT 7, commanding their favorite Toyota models in competitive gameplay, all vying for exciting prizes.
The tournament is structured into two main segments: School esports Tournaments on July 26-27 featuring Rocket League, Fortnite, EA FC, Clash Royale, and GT 7; and the University esports Tournament plus Public esports Open Tournament on July 27-28, continuing the excitement with Rocket League, Fortnite, EA FC, and GT 7.
This partnership not only positions Toyota as a pioneer in the esports realm but also underscores its commitment to engaging with the next generation of consumers through innovative platforms. As esports continues to gain traction globally, Toyota’s involvement in the African Gaming Championship stands as a testament to its dedication to driving progress and shaping the future of gaming across Africa.
