Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) has unveiled the all-new Toyota RAV4, introducing a sixth-generation model that builds on more than three decades of success while ushering one of the world's most recognisable SUVs into a new era of electrification, connectivity and advanced safety.

As the vehicle that helped create the modern crossover segment, the RAV4 has continuously evolved to meet changing customer demands. The latest generation arrives with a broader range of powertrain options, a more sophisticated design, enhanced practicality and Toyota's most advanced suite of driver assistance technologies yet.

Developed around the philosophy of "Life is an Adventure" and launched under the theme "Discover Every Horizon", the new RAV4 is designed to seamlessly transition between urban commuting, family duties and weekend exploration. Whether navigating city traffic, heading out on a road trip or embracing electrified mobility for the first time, Toyota says the new RAV4 has been engineered to make every journey more rewarding.

The arrival of the all-new model marks another milestone for a nameplate that has become one of Toyota's greatest success stories. Since its debut in 1994, more than 15 million RAV4 units have been sold globally, helping establish the crossover SUV segment that now dominates automotive markets around the world.

The latest generation embraces what Toyota describes as "SUV Toughness Meets Urban Sophistication". A bold front-end design features a prominent hexagonal lower bumper, sharp LED lighting signatures and distinctive hammerhead-inspired styling cues that create a stronger visual identity. Cat-eye headlamps contribute to both aerodynamic efficiency and the vehicle's adventurous character.

The side profile retains the upright proportions and muscular stance associated with previous RAV4 models while introducing sculpted surfaces, redesigned mirrors and improved aerodynamic detailing. At the rear, sleek lighting elements span the width of the vehicle, framing prominent RAV4 badging and delivering a contemporary appearance both day and night.

Practicality remains central to the RAV4 formula. Cargo capacity has increased by four percent compared with the previous model, providing additional versatility for families, active lifestyles and outdoor enthusiasts. Depending on the derivative, customers can choose from a range of newly designed alloy wheels, including distinctive 20-inch options, while new bi-tone paint finishes add further visual appeal.

For the first time, South African buyers will be able to choose from a comprehensive range of powertrains that includes conventional petrol, hybrid electric, performance-inspired hybrid and plug-in hybrid derivatives. This reflects Toyota's multi-pathway approach to electrification, allowing customers to select the technology best suited to their individual needs.

The range includes a proven 2.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine producing 127kW and 203Nm. For buyers seeking greater efficiency without sacrificing performance, Toyota's latest 2.5-litre Hybrid Electric Vehicle system delivers 137kW and 221Nm, with a total system output of 163kW. A newly developed compact lithium-ion battery improves power delivery, reduces weight and enhances overall responsiveness.

Sitting at the top of the range is the all-new Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle. Combining Toyota's sixth-generation PHEV technology with a high-capacity 25.4kWh lithium-ion battery, the flagship model produces an impressive 225kW of total system output. The advanced battery system incorporates water-cooling technology to improve durability, charging efficiency and overall performance.

Toyota says the RAV4 PHEV is capable of travelling up to 142 kilometres in electric-only mode under test conditions, allowing many owners to complete daily commuting requirements without using any fuel. Charging flexibility has also been prioritised, with support for home charging, public AC charging and DC fast charging. An 11kW onboard charger helps reduce charging times, while each vehicle is supplied with charging cables and an AC wallbox charger.

A major highlight of the new line-up is the introduction of the first-ever RAV4 GR-S. Inspired by the engineering philosophy of Toyota Gazoo Racing, the GR-S adds a more engaging dynamic character to the RAV4 range.

Exclusive styling enhancements include a unique mesh grille, aerodynamic exterior treatments, gloss-black wheel arch mouldings, GR badging and distinctive 20-inch alloy wheels complemented by red brake callipers. Beyond the visual upgrades, the GR-S receives dedicated shock absorbers, revised spring rates, reinforced suspension components and a 15mm lower ride height.

Additional chassis bracing, suspension recalibration and steering revisions have been implemented to improve handling precision, cornering stability and driver feedback. Inside, GR sports seats, alloy pedals, red contrast stitching and exclusive trim details reinforce the model's performance-inspired personality.

The interior of the all-new RAV4 has undergone a complete transformation. Toyota's new "Digital Island" architecture creates a cleaner, more intuitive environment while integrating advanced digital technologies throughout the cabin.

Every model features a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster that offers multiple display configurations and customisation options. Depending on specification level, infotainment duties are handled by either a 10.5-inch or 12.9-inch touchscreen running Toyota's latest multimedia platform, complete with wireless smartphone integration, enhanced graphics and faster processing performance.

Higher-grade derivatives introduce premium features such as JBL audio, wireless charging, digital rear-view mirror technology, memory-adjustable seats, heated and ventilated seating, panoramic roof options and Toyota's innovative shift-by-wire technology.

Safety has always been a cornerstone of the RAV4's appeal and the latest generation raises the benchmark even further. The new model becomes the first Toyota in South Africa to introduce Toyota Safety Sense 4.0.

The comprehensive suite includes a Driver Monitor System, Adaptive High Beam System, Road Sign Assist, Emergency Steering Assist and Intersection Collision Avoidance functionality. Depending on derivative, customers can also benefit from Blind Spot Monitoring with Safety Exit Assist, Intelligent Park Assist, Parking Support Brake technology, Head-Up Display functionality and a Driver Monitor Camera.

A 3D Panoramic View Monitor improves visibility during parking manoeuvres, while Parking Support Brake technology helps reduce the risk of low-speed collisions in confined spaces.

Beneath the surface, the new RAV4 rides on an enhanced version of Toyota's TNGA-K platform. Engineers have achieved a 9.7 percent increase in body rigidity, contributing to improved handling precision, ride comfort and overall refinement. The use of high-damping adhesives further reduces noise and vibration levels within the cabin.

The suspension system continues to utilise MacPherson struts at the front and a multi-link arrangement at the rear, although extensive revisions have been made to improve steering response, stability and ride quality. Enhanced braking systems and upgraded all-wheel-drive capability further strengthen the RAV4's credentials as a versatile SUV capable of handling a wide range of driving conditions.

The local range starts with the RAV4 2.5 HEV GX, priced at R770 500. The RAV4 2.0 VX follows at R799 900, while the RAV4 2.5 HEV VX is available for R927 800. The performance-oriented RAV4 2.5 HEV GR-S carries a price tag of R941 800, while the flagship RAV4 2.5 PHEV tops the range at R1 043 900.

All models are sold with a six-services/90 000km service plan and a three-year/100 000km warranty. The electrified battery systems are covered by an eight-year/160 000km warranty. Buyers also gain access to Toyota's connected services ecosystem through the MyToyota platform, with all new vehicles equipped with connectivity hardware that enables in-car WiFi and includes a complimentary 25GB data allocation.

With its expanded powertrain line-up, advanced safety technologies, improved practicality and significantly enhanced digital experience, the all-new Toyota RAV4 represents the most comprehensive evolution of the model to date and reinforces its position as one of South Africa's most important SUV offerings.
