The Toyota GR Corolla continues to assert itself as a standout in the high-performance hot hatch segment, now expanded with the introduction of a sophisticated eight-speed automatic transmission. Designed to elevate driveability, cooling performance, and daily usability, the new automatic variant broadens the appeal of the GR Corolla without compromising the razor-sharp dynamics of its GR-FOUR all-wheel-drive system or its turbocharged 1.6-litre three-cylinder engine. Since arriving in South Africa in 2023, the GR Corolla has played a key role in strengthening Toyota’s Gazoo Racing performance portfolio, complementing the GR Yaris and reinforcing the brand’s growing sports car credentials.
The 8-speed automatic model is engineered to excel under sustained high-load conditions, featuring an air-cooled automatic transmission fluid cooler, an additional sub-radiator behind the front vents, and a cool-air duct above the brake duct to optimise thermal efficiency. Aerodynamic refinements include the removal of the front fog lamps to reduce drag, while rear and back window privacy glass enhances passenger comfort and contributes to a purposeful exterior design. Across the range, Torsen limited-slip differentials optimise traction and cornering, while rebound springs in the suspension and revised rear geometry improve stability during spirited driving. A higher-capacity 500W cooling fan coupling and a tyre pressure monitoring system add further mechanical refinement.
The GR Corolla automatic is equipped with the GR Direct Automatic Transmission (GR D-AT), designed for rapid, precise gear changes that anticipate driver inputs, enabling a more connected driving experience. Paddle shifters, sequential shift functionality, shift-lock protection, ATF temperature warnings, and an advanced Parking Support Brake system are integrated for both performance and safety. An onboard diagnostic system ensures emissions compliance and simplified monitoring.
Inside, the cabin emphasises driver-focused refinements, with GR gun metallic accents replacing chrome across the instrument panel, centre console, gear knob, and seat detailing. Ergonomic improvements, including the repositioned iMT switch, place key controls within easy reach, while an upgraded audio system, active noise control, reverse camera, blind-spot monitoring with Safe Exit Assist, and smart door-lock system enhance convenience and security.

At the heart of the GR Corolla remains the GR-FOUR all-wheel-drive system, delivering seamless torque distribution for maximum traction and control. The turbocharged 1.6-litre engine produces 210kW and 400Nm of torque, enabling a top speed of 230km/h. Drivers can now choose between the engaging six-speed manual or the new eight-speed automatic transmission, both paired with three driving modes—Eco, Normal, and Sport—and GR-tuned suspension to ensure versatility on both road and track. A triple-exit exhaust delivers an unmistakably aggressive soundtrack, reinforcing the model’s motorsport DNA.
Technology and safety are central to the GR Corolla experience, with features such as a Head-Up Display, seven-inch touchscreen infotainment with wireless charging, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Adaptive High-Speed Cruise Control, and a reverse camera. Toyota Safety Sense, Hill Assist Control, Vehicle Stability Control, ABS, and EBD come standard, while front and rear limited-slip differentials on the Circuit Edition further enhance spirited driving control.
The GR Corolla is offered in striking exterior colours including Midnight Red, Glacier White, Raven Black, and Fierce Red. Pricing starts at R985 200 for the manual model, with the automatic variant at R1 010 700. All models come with a 9-service/90 000km plan and a 3-year/100 000km warranty, with options to extend service, maintenance, or warranty through Toyota’s nationwide dealer network. Owners can also leverage MyToyota for personalised vehicle management and enjoy in-car WiFi and connected services when opting in. With the introduction of the eight-speed automatic and a suite of performance enhancements, the GR Corolla remains a thrilling and practical performance hatch that embodies Toyota’s Gazoo Racing ethos.
