Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) continues to lead local vehicle sales, racking up 11 560 sales of the overall 45 352 units sold to domestic customers during February. This translates to a market share of 25.4%. TSAM topped the charts in Passenger, Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) and Medium Commercial Vehicle (MCV) segments.

In the LCV segment, Hilux is – once again – the top performer while the much-sought-after Corolla Cross makes a strong showing in the Passenger segment. The latter registered a total of 1 683 units to help Toyota claim the lead in the Passenger category with a total of 5 971 sales. Other top performers in the category include the Starlet (1 311) and Corolla Quest (798).

Hilux continues to be a fan favourite leading the way with 3 631 units sold – including 1 698 Double Cabs, 507 Xtra Cabs and 1 130 Single Cabs. Hiace posted 1 342 models, while Land Cruiser Pick-Up registered 398 sales. In total, Toyota retailed 5 251 LCV units.

The company’s luxury arm Lexus registered a total of 43 units, including 11 ES and 13 NX models. On the truck front, Hino sold a total of 287 units in February. The 200-Series posted 53 units while the 300-Series and the 500-Series recorded 115 and 119 units apiece.

“February is traditionally a tough sales month, with reduced trading days and financial year-end amongst various corporate companies – however, the market showed great resilience. So, the industry keeps a keen eye on February sales to better gauge vehicle sales momentum at the start of the new year,” says Vice President of Marketing at TSAM, Glenn Crompton.

For the month of February, just over 1.3 million parts’ pieces were supplied to domestic dealers while a further 300 000 pieces were shipped to foreign markets.

According to the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (naamsa): “New vehicle sales had a firm and momentum-building second month to the year. The total domestic new vehicle sales increased by 1 128 units, or 2.6%, to 45 352 units, compared to the same period last year.”

“Toyota and its wide dealer channel remain committed to creating customer smiles and providing quality, reliable and durable transport in all segments of the market. Once again, we are grateful to the entire Toyota team and dealers across the country for their continued efforts towards making Toyota a market leader,” concludes Crompton.
