Toyota C-HR: The Stylish and Capable Crossover SUV

Toyota has been a household name in South Africa for decades, and their reputation for reliability and quality vehicles is well-known. In recent years, Toyota has expanded its offerings to include stylish and capable crossover SUVs, and the Toyota C-HR is a prime example of this.

The Toyota C-HR is a unique and visually arresting crossover SUV that challenges traditional perceptions of the Toyota brand. The C-HR made its global debut in 2016 and introduced Toyota’s new expressive design language and Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform construction. This platform not only provides a solid and refined driving experience but also enhances fuel efficiency and reduces CO2 emissions, making it a more environmentally friendly option.

Under the hood, the Toyota C-HR is powered by an acclaimed 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine that produces 85kW and 185Nm of torque, paired with either a CVT or 6-speed manual transmission. This engine provides effortless mid-range punch and cruising ability while maintaining excellent fuel efficiency of just 6.3 litres per 100 km (6.4 for the CVT) and low CO2 emissions of 141 – 144 g/km.

The Toyota C-HR is available in three grades: the ‘1.2T’, the ‘Plus,’ and the ‘Luxury’ variants. The ‘1.2T’ is the base model, while the ‘Plus’ and ‘Luxury’ models offer additional features and enhancements.

The exterior of the Toyota C-HR is stylish and modern, with sharp lines and distinctive LED lighting. The 2022 model year features new 18″ directional alloy wheels fitted to the Plus and Luxury grade models, shod with 225/50/R18 rubber, and a space-saver spare wheel that enhances luggage capacity. The color line-up has also been revised, with striking new options such as Midnight Purple, Fierce Red, and Eclipse Black. The Luxury models are available in a charismatic bi-tone configuration only, with nine unique configurations to suit the buyer’s persona.

The interior of the Toyota C-HR is equally impressive, with a sleek and modern design that is both comfortable and functional. All C-HR models carry a comprehensive specification level, with the standard grade boasting daytime running lights (DRL), LED headlamps with auto function and exterior color coding. An 8″ (20cm) touchscreen audio system includes Apple CarPlay/Android Auto functionality, Bluetooth, and USB provisions as well as a reverse camera display. Plus variants add front fog lamps, rain-sensing wipers, leather steering wheel trim, cruise control, and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, while the air-conditioning is upgraded to the dual-zone climate control type.

The Toyota C-HR also scores highly on the safety front, with ABS, EBD, Brake Assist (BA), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Hill Assist Control (HAC), and Trailer Sway Control (TSC) on all models. The Luxury grade features the active safety system; Toyota Safety Sense (TSS), which encompasses Pre-Collision System (PCS), Auto High Beam (AHB), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), and Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM).

In terms of pricing, the Toyota C-HR is competitive with other crossover SUVs in its class. The 2022 model year pricing starts at R 429,000 for the ‘1.2T’ model and goes up to R 554,500 for the ‘Luxury’ model.

Overall, the Toyota C-HR is a stylish and capable crossover SUV that is perfect for South Africans who want a reliable, efficient, and modern vehicle that is well-suited to urban environments
