Toyota is no stranger to environmental accolades thanks largely to the Prius success story, however, this time it’s the Auris HSD’s turn to take the honours, ‘driving’ off with the trophy for the best green car in the 2012 WOW Women’s Car of the Year Awards.
As the voice of female consumers, the awards saw WOW readers and the ‘all-girl’ judging panel vote for their favourite vehicles in 12 distinct categories. This year a record 79 000 votes were received via SMS and the online poll.
What made the Auris HSD such a hit with the ladies? It’s frugality obviously – it consumes a miserly 3,8 litres per 100km in the combined cycle. Environmental credentials also play their part – the Auris HSD produces just 89g/km of CO2 emissions. But, according to the WOW judges, the HSD’s trump card is its startling performance courtesy of the 1.8-litre Atkinson Cycle petrol engine working in tandem with the electric motor: “When you floor the accelerator, it responds instantly.”
“I am delighted with the recognition that Toyota has received for the Auris. It’s one of those cars that’s not just green on paper, it’s green where it really counts, providing the kind of real world fuel consumption that is truly an eye-opener. But, above all, the HSD is proof that green can also be fun,” says Kerry Roodt, General Manager of Marketing Communications for Toyota South Africa.
