Rare, dramatic, and beautiful, some of the world’s most important Rolls-Royces are set to gather at Blenheim Palace next month for an extraordinary celebration of automotive history. This exclusive event, part of the Salon Privé Concours presented by Aviva Private Clients, will take place on August 28-29, 2024, and will mark 19 years of Salon Privé – renowned as the UK’s most exclusive automotive garden party.
In tribute to Rolls-Royce Motor Cars’ 120th anniversary, Salon Privé has curated a remarkable collection of the company’s most dazzling machines from the 20th century. These iconic vehicles, displayed on the majestic lawns of Blenheim Palace, form part of the ‘Inspiring Greatness – 120 Years of Rolls-Royce’ Class. Each car represents a significant chapter in the evolution of one of the world’s most renowned automobile manufacturers.
The lineup includes the 1911 RAC trials car, famously responsible for the ‘Best Car in the World’ slogan, and the Hooper-bodied Silver Wraith Geneva Show car from 1953. Also featured is the film-star Phantom V, once belonging to John Lennon, and many other legendary models that have defined Rolls-Royce’s illustrious history.
1911 40/50hp – ‘1701’, aka The Sluggard
Starting with one of Rolls-Royce’s most important breakthrough cars from the Edwardian period, the 1911 40/50hp, also known as ‘The Sluggard,’ played a pivotal role in securing the brand’s reputation. Commissioned as an ‘experimental speed model’ with a modified six-cylinder engine for higher performance, ‘1701’ clinched the record from rival company Napier during the 1911 London to Edinburgh Top Gear Trial. Despite its success, the car’s chassis design was not suitable for carrying heavy bodywork and was never seriously developed. Today, ‘1701’ is a testament to Rolls-Royce’s early engineering prowess and endurance.

Ordered by cotton magnate Sir John Leigh in 1933, the Phantom II Continental by Freestone & Webb exemplifies the brand’s commitment to bespoke craftsmanship.
