Volvo has never treated exploration as a weekend hobby. It is a mindset, engineered into the metal. With the EX60 Cross Country, that philosophy steps decisively into the electric era, blending Volvo’s long-standing Cross Country heritage with the brand’s most advanced all-electric technology to date.
Revealed alongside the global debut of the all-electric EX60, the EX60 Cross Country offers a more adventurous interpretation of Volvo’s next-generation electric SUV. It delivers all the strengths of the EX60, including class-leading electric range, fast charging and cutting-edge safety and connectivity, while adding the rugged confidence and expressive design that have defined Cross Country models since 1997.
At its core, the EX60 Cross Country is designed for drivers who expect more freedom from their vehicle. Standard all-wheel drive ensures confident traction across changing surfaces, while a raised ride height reinforces its go-anywhere character. Compared with the standard EX60, the Cross Country sits 20 millimetres higher off the ground, enhancing visibility and control. With adaptive air suspension fitted, drivers can raise the vehicle by a further 20 millimetres when conditions demand extra clearance, or lower it at speed to improve efficiency, stability and aerodynamics on long highway journeys.
This adaptability reflects Volvo’s belief that capability should be intelligent, not excessive. The EX60 Cross Country remains refined and efficient in everyday driving, yet ready to tackle rougher terrain or unpredictable weather without hesitation.
Visually, the EX60 Cross Country stands apart from the rest of the EX60 range. Exclusive Frost Green paint draws inspiration from Scandinavian landscapes, giving the SUV a calm but purposeful presence. Unique Cross Country wheels, wider rugged wheel arches and brushed stainless steel skid plates at the front and rear add to its robust stance. Subtle yet confident Cross Country branding on the bumpers and D-pillar signals its special position within the Volvo line-up without resorting to excess.
While the design clearly communicates strength, the EX60 Cross Country remains true to Volvo’s modern Scandinavian aesthetic, balancing toughness with restraint and clarity.
Underneath its expressive exterior, the EX60 Cross Country delivers the same advanced electric performance that defines the EX60 family. The first variant to be introduced is the P10 AWD Electric, offering up to 640 kilometres of range under WLTP testing, supported by fast-charging capability for convenient long-distance travel. A P12 AWD Electric version with extended range will follow shortly after, broadening customer choice.
As Erik Severinson, Chief Commercial Officer at Volvo Cars, explains, the EX60 Cross Country is aimed at those who see driving as an extension of their ambition. “The EX60 Cross Country is the EX60 for anyone with a ‘go anywhere’ attitude. Built to do more and see more, it embodies not only a sense of exploration but also a reflection of achievement. We basically invented this segment, and we felt the EX60 was the perfect next Volvo to get the Cross Country treatment.”
That sense of exploration resonates strongly with South African drivers, where versatility and long-distance usability remain key considerations. According to Grant Locke, Managing Director of Volvo Car South Africa, the EX60 Cross Country aligns naturally with local expectations. “South Africans have always had a strong connection to exploration and enjoying the freedom of the open road. The EX60 Cross Country builds on that spirit and will form part of the EX60’s available versions. It embodies the confidence and capability customers expect from a Cross Country model, while staying true to Volvo’s commitment to sustainability.”
While local specifications, powertrain options and availability are still under evaluation, the intention is clear. The EX60 Cross Country is designed to deliver genuine real-world usability, combining electric efficiency with the confidence needed for varied landscapes and lifestyles.
With the EX60 Cross Country, Volvo is not simply electrifying an SUV. It is reinterpreting a legacy of freedom, resilience and thoughtful engineering for a new generation, proving that the spirit of exploration does not disappear in the transition to electric power. It evolves.
