The Ultimate Retro Revival
On Saturday, September 7th, 2024, automotive enthusiasts will gather at The Historic Dockyard in Chatham, Kent, for the eagerly anticipated RADwood UK event. This unique celebration, presented by Hagerty, is a vibrant homage to the cars, culture, and lifestyle of the 1980s and 1990s. With tickets starting at just £15, RADwood UK promises a nostalgic journey filled with period-correct dress, iconic music, and automotive splendor.
The Birth of RADwood: A Unique Concept
RADwood was conceived by Californians Art Cervantes and Warren Madsen, two avid car enthusiasts who identified a gap in the automotive culture landscape. As Cervantes explains, “There was a lot of interest in what I call metal bumper classics – pre-1975 and older cars. Then there’s also the modern supercar world, but nothing in between.” Inspired by their own love for ’80s and ’90s cars, which they found both attainable and personally significant, Cervantes and Madsen launched the first RADwood event in June 2017 in San Francisco.
From Podcast to Phenomenon: The Growth of RADwood
Using their podcast, Driving While Awesome, Cervantes and Madsen floated the idea of RADwood to their audience. The enthusiastic response led to the first event, which featured 150 cars and 400 attendees. By December of the same year, the event had grown to 400 cars and 2,000 attendees in Orange County, south of Los Angeles. RADwood’s success in the USA paved the way for its expansion across the Atlantic.
RADwood UK: Embracing Retro Culture
The first UK RADwood event took place in 2019 at Goodwood, a fitting location for this retro celebration. Now under the Hagerty umbrella, RADwood has continued to grow, offering fans an even richer experience. The UK events have embraced the same ethos as their American counterparts, with participants dressing in period-correct clothing, enjoying era-specific music, and indulging in the arcade games of the ’80s and ’90s.

A Multigenerational Appeal
“Our main demographic is around 45, but it’s an interesting bell curve that’s flatter than you think,” Cervantes notes. The appeal of RADwood spans generations, attracting enthusiasts in their 20s as well. The resurgence of retro fashion and pop culture has played a significant role in this cross-generational interest. From power suits and hi-tops to hot hatches and classic BMWs, RADwood offers something for everyone.
The 2024 Event: What to Expect
The 2024 RADwood UK event at The Historic Dockyard in Chatham is set to be a highlight of the automotive calendar. Attendees can expect a dazzling array of ’80s and ’90s cars, from E36 M3s and 944 Porsches to iconic hot hatches. The event will also feature live music, entertainment, and the opportunity to immerse oneself in the vibrant culture of the era.
A Celebration of Automotive Heritage
RADwood UK 2024 is more than just a car show; it’s a celebration of an era that holds a special place in the hearts of many.
