The All-New Škoda Superb iV: Redefining Plug-In Hybrid Performance
Škoda has officially opened the order books for the eagerly anticipated all-new Superb iV plug-in hybrid, starting at £41,465 OTR. This new model marks a significant leap forward, introducing Škoda’s second-generation plug-in hybrid drivetrain that promises an impressive all-electric range and the capability to use high-speed DC rapid chargers. The launch of the Superb iV, alongside the recently released second-generation Kodiaq iV, underscores Škoda’s leadership in the plug-in hybrid market.
Superior All-Electric Capabilities
The Superb iV builds on the success of its predecessor, offering substantial enhancements in all-electric performance. Designed from the ground up to integrate the latest plug-in hybrid technology, the fourth-generation Superb features a larger battery pack and advanced power electronics to optimize range and efficiency. Despite the increase in battery size, the Superb retains its hallmark qualities of space and practicality. Exclusively available as an estate, the Superb iV boasts a 510-litre boot, expanding to 1,770 litres with the rear seats folded, and offers best-in-class rear legroom.
Advanced Plug-In Drivetrain
The Superb iV’s drivetrain combines a highly efficient 1.5 TSI four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor integrated into the DQ400e six-speed DSG gearbox. The petrol engine produces 150PS, while the electric motor adds 116PS, resulting in a combined system output of 204PS. This setup allows the motor to operate independently or alongside the engine, enhancing performance and efficiency.
Key to this second-generation system is a significantly larger 25.7kWh (19.7kWh usable) lithium-ion battery pack, nearly doubling the capacity of the first-generation battery. Positioned under the rear seats, this new pack extends the WLTP all-electric driving range to up to 84 miles (SE Technology), a marked improvement over the previous model’s 35 miles.
Innovative Charging Solutions
For the first time, the Superb iV supports DC rapid charging via a new CCS socket, enabling a 10-80% charge in approximately 26 minutes at a peak speed of 50kW. The charging ports, now relocated to the front wing for easier access, also support up to 11kW AC charging, achieving a 10-80% charge in about 2 hours 30 minutes.
Flexible Driving Modes
The Superb iV offers three driving modes, accessible through the infotainment system’s ‘Hybrid’ icon:
E-mode: Electric-only drive, the default mode if the battery is sufficiently charged and the outside temperature is above -10°C.
Hybrid mode: The control unit dynamically selects the optimal combination of electric motor and engine to minimize fuel consumption.
Sport mode: Maximizes the combined power of the petrol engine and electric motor for a dynamic driving experience, delivering up to 204PS and 350Nm of torque.
Trim Levels and Pricing
The Superb iV is available in three trim levels:
- SE Technology: Starting at £41,465 OTR, includes 17-inch Mintaka silver alloys, a 13-inch central infotainment display with Sat Nav, and a 10.25-inch Virtual Cockpit. Other features include heated front seats, Rear View Camera, Adaptive Cruise Control, and more.
- SE L: Starting at £44,820 OTR, adds 18-inch Dofida silver alloys, rear LED lights with animated indicators, LED matrix beam headlights, sports comfort seats with massage function, and an electrically-operated boot with Virtual Pedal.
- Laurin & Klement (L&K): Starting at £48,540 OTR, includes 18-inch Belatrix aero anthracite alloys, a premium L&K interior, CANTON sound system, heated seats, Park Assist, and Area View camera.
Efficiency and Savings
Thanks to the enhanced plug-in hybrid drivetrain, the Superb iV offers significant cost savings, particularly for fleet and company car drivers. All models attract a Benefit in Kind rate of just 5%. Additionally, drivers with access to home charging and low-rate overnight tariffs can achieve further savings, especially when operating in electric-only E-mode.
