From the untamed beauty of South Africa’s rugged landscapes to the relentless challenge of its roughest terrain, the inaugural South African Safari Rally (SASR) is set to be a thrilling spectacle. As part of the World Rally-Raid Championship (W2RC), this event promises to push both international and local competitors to their absolute limits, with a race route that demands strength, speed, endurance, and agility from the drivers, navigators, and motorcycles that take on its formidable challenges.
Scheduled for 18-24 May 2025, the South African Safari Rally will be based at the iconic Sun City resort in the North West Province. Known for its incredible natural beauty, the area will set the stage for an event that is as much about conquering the land as it is about conquering the clock. Motorsport enthusiasts can look forward to an awe-inspiring display of skill and power, as teams battle not only the terrain but also the elements in their quest for victory.
A Year of Preparation: Crafting the Ultimate Challenge
The South African Safari Rally has been a long time in the making. For nearly a year, the organising team has been meticulously scouting, refining, and perfecting the route. In March and April of this year, the team, led by route director Evan Hutchison and supported by the experts from Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO)—the promoter of both the FIA and FIM World Rally-Raid Championships—completed the final route reconnaissance.
“The preparation has been intense,” says Hutchison, a seasoned South African rally-raid champion with decades of experience in the sport. “We covered 4,270 km over a period of two weeks, navigating through terrain that has never been raced on before. We didn’t choose the easy way; we picked the toughest routes—rocky sections, thick bush, and winding riverbeds—that will challenge even the most capable off-road vehicles in the world.”
This gruelling reconnaissance not only refined the route but also provided valuable insights into the real demands the rally would place on the competitors. As Hutchison explains, “The goal was to ensure that competitors will face the full range of challenges—from tricky navigation to the toughest terrain—just as they would in the most demanding rally events around the world.”
Toyota Hilux: The Backbone of the Reconnaissance
For the reconnaissance mission, the team relied on a pair of Toyota Hilux 4x4s, known for their rugged reliability and ability to conquer Africa’s toughest terrains. Equipped with all the necessary gear and accessories for such an arduous task, the Hiluxes were fitted with Falken WildPeak M/T 265/70 R17 mud-terrain tyres—an essential component for navigating the harsh, unpredictable terrain.
“We encountered everything from thick mud to treacherous rock-strewn paths,” Hutchison notes. “But the Hiluxes never faltered, and remarkably, we didn’t experience a single puncture during the entire 8,540 km journey. That’s a true testament to the capability of both the vehicles and the Falken tyres.”
The Falken WildPeak M/T tyres, specifically designed for off-road adventures, proved crucial in the team’s ability to keep moving forward, even when the going got tough. Hutchison recalls multiple occasions when the team got stuck in the deep mud but was able to extricate themselves without issue, thanks to the durable, reliable tyres. “Without those tyres, we would’ve wasted a lot more time and energy trying to free ourselves from those tricky conditions,” he says.

The Challenge Ahead
While the final route has been set, the competitors will face an unpredictable mix of elements. Although the team encountered a significant amount of rain during the route reconnaissance, making the terrain even more difficult to navigate, the event organisers anticipate drier conditions when the rally officially kicks off with the Prologue on 19 May 2025. However, as anyone with experience in rally-raid will tell you, the terrain in the North West Province can be unforgiving, with every stage posing a new and unique challenge.
From the rocky outcrops of the bush to the winding riverbeds and unmarked paths, the South African Safari Rally will test the full range of skills required in rally-raid events: speed, endurance, navigation, and the ability to adapt to rapidly changing conditions. The five stages that follow the Prologue will push drivers and riders to their limits, with every inch of the 2025 SASR route demanding focus and precision.
Entering the Arena
As the countdown to the event continues, rally teams from across the globe are preparing for the opportunity of a lifetime. The closing date for entries is 30 April 2025, and with the excitement and anticipation building, the inaugural South African Safari Rally promises to be a defining moment for the world of motorsport.
For those looking to witness history in the making, the SASR will be an event that blends South Africa’s natural beauty with the raw, unrelenting power of rally-raid competition. Whether you’re a motorsport enthusiast or a newcomer to the world of rally-raid, the South African Safari Rally is set to be an event that will leave a lasting impression.
The Ultimate Test of Man and Machine
At its heart, the South African Safari Rally is a race of endurance—testing not just the capabilities of the machines but also the grit and determination of the men and women behind the wheel. From the first turn of the wheels on the Prologue to the final stage, every moment will count as competitors push through some of the world’s most demanding terrain in search of glory.
For Toyota Gazoo Racing, this rally represents a significant step in their long-standing commitment to motorsport excellence and their ability to face—and conquer—the world’s toughest challenges. The South African Safari Rally will undoubtedly stand as a testament to the strength, resilience, and ingenuity of both human and machine.
So, mark your calendars and prepare for an event that promises to redefine what is possible in the world of rally-raid. The South African Safari Rally is coming—and it’s going to be legendary.
