Aspiring motoring writers aged 17-23 are invited to enter the prestigious Sir William Lyons Award. The winner will receive a £2000 prize – courtesy of award sponsor Jaguar, after whose founder the award is named – a handcrafted trophy, two years’ associate membership of The Guild of Motoring Writers and widespread industry recognition. This can then be used as a launch pad to a career in automotive media.
The GoMW – the world’s foremost association of professional automotive journalists, broadcasters and photographers – has offered the Sir William Lyons Award to budding young motoring writers annually since 1966. The award is open to eligible Guild members and non-members, and past winners who went on to become influential names within the industry include Tim Pollard, Alistair Weaver, Angus Frazer, Tim Watson and Tom Barnard.
Guild chairman-elect Richard Aucock – himself a Sir Williams Lyons Award winner – comments: “This is a genuine big break prize. It has been helping young people establish themselves in motoring journalism for decades: the glittering roll call of past winners is evidence of its success. There are no barriers either: as long as you fall within the age range and can write well, you’re in with a chance of winning. Will it be your name added to the list of winners next year?”
Entrants, who at the closing date of 30 September 2012 must also hold or be eligible for a UK passport and be resident in the UK, must complete a two-part assignment. Part one consists of a 500-word piece, and part two a 1,000-word article, both on a set choice of subjects.
