U.K. buyers in the market for a new convertible car face the fewest model choices in nearly 20 years, according to the latest annual Convertibles Report by CarGurus. This leading automotive marketplace in the U.K. for shopping, buying, and selling used vehicles reveals a significant decline in the availability of new convertible models, with just 22 options from the U.K.’s 30 most popular manufacturers. This marks a 41% decrease from the 37 models available in 2005.
The report highlights that 60% of Britain’s 30 most popular car brands no longer offer a convertible model, a notable increase from 23% in 2005. Brands like Hyundai, Kia, Seat, Skoda, and Dacia have never sold a convertible. In contrast, since 2000, Volkswagen, BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Mazda, Jaguar, Porsche, and Jeep have consistently offered convertibles in the U.K. The Mazda MX-5 stands out as the longest-running convertible, on sale for over 34 years, followed by the Jeep Wrangler at 27 years.
Recent trends show a further reduction in the convertible market. In the past year alone, Lexus and Smart have ceased offering convertible models in the U.K., discontinuing the LC 500 and EQ Fortwo Cabrio, respectively. The Audi TT Roadster, a staple since 1999, ended production in 2023 after 24 years. Moreover, Toyota and Honda have not sold convertibles in the U.K. for over 15 years, with the last models being the Toyota MR2 in 2007 and the Honda S2000 in 2009.
However, there are new developments as well. MG has re-entered the convertible market for the first time since 2011 with its all-electric Cyberster model. For those interested in electric convertibles, there are currently only four models available: the Fiat 500e Convertible, Abarth 500e Cabrio, MG Cyberster, and the MINI Electric Convertible.
Chris Knapman, Editorial Director at CarGurus UK, commented on the situation, saying, “Despite consumers having fewer new car convertible models to choose from than at any point in nearly 20 years, the used market does present some significant saving opportunities for those looking for the unique thrill of open-top driving this summer and beyond. For less than £15,000, there’s a broad range of options depending on individual preferences.”

CarGurus has also produced a guide to the best convertibles for various budgets, from £2,000 to £100,000, to assist buyers in navigating the wider array of models available in the used market. According to their data, the top five best-value used convertibles under £15,000 are:
- Audi A3 Cabriolet (2016): Average price £12,495.71, a 25.10% decrease from the previous year.
- Mercedes SLK (2014): Average price £10,355.60, a 20.80% decrease.
- BMW 2 Series Convertible (2017): Average price £14,353.61, a 19.90% decrease.
- Fiat 500C (2018): Average price £10,677.36, an 18.50% decrease.
- MINI Cooper Convertible (2018): Average price £13,642.68, a 14.80% decrease.
For those with varied budgets, CarGurus recommends a range of convertibles from the affordable Mazda MX-5 to the luxurious Bentley Continental GTC. With such a diverse selection in the used market, consumers can still find a convertible that suits their needs and budget despite the shrinking availability of new models.
As the convertible market evolves, buyers must stay informed about trends and opportunities, making use of resources like the CarGurus guide to make the best purchasing decisions. Whether looking for a budget-friendly used model or one of the few new electric convertibles, there are still plenty of options for open-top driving enthusiasts in the U.K.
