Johannesburg, August 19, 2025 – Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPV), a subsidiary of India’s largest automotive manufacturer, has officially re-entered the South African passenger vehicle market, ushering in a new era for the brand. The launch event at The Galleria in Sandton marked the unveiling of four new models—the Harrier, Curvv, Punch, and Tiago—each purpose-built to meet the unique mobility needs of South African consumers.
This strategic re-entry is strengthened by a partnership with Motus Holdings, South Africa’s leading automotive group. The move comes at a time of rapid growth for TMPV, with sales surging from 170,000 units in 2020 to over 560,000 in 2024—an impressive 350% increase. Renowned as a pioneer of automotive safety in India, TMPV now offers a line-up where every model holds a 4- or 5-star rating from respected New Car Assessment Programs, including Global NCAP (GNCAP) and Bharat NCAP (BNCAP).
“South Africa represents a significant milestone in Tata Motors’ global journey,” said Mr. Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles. “We are proud to introduce a new generation of vehicles that combine modern design, advanced technology, and uncompromising safety. With Motus as our trusted partner, we are committed to delivering an ownership experience that meets the high expectations of South African customers.”
Mr. Ockert Janse Van Rensburg, Group CEO of Motus Holdings, added: “This partnership is about more than just vehicles. With Tata’s reputation for engineering excellence and Motus’ strong distribution, retail, and aftersales network, we will deliver exceptional value and service while building lasting trust with customers across South Africa.”
At launch, TMPV will be supported by a network of 40 dealerships nationwide, with plans to expand to 60 by 2026. Alongside its commercial goals, the company is investing in skills development, job creation, and training programs, while also partnering with leading financial institutions to make high-quality mobility more accessible to local consumers.
