SVI Engineering, a leading manufacturer of armoured products, proudly introduces the BMW-approved armoured version of the X3 M40i, now certified by BMW AG. This marks a significant first in Africa, with BMW extending its armouring certification to the continent.
The Rosslyn-built X3 M40i is equipped with NIJ Level IIIA protection, safeguarding against firearms such as 9mm and .44 Magnum handguns. This level of protection ensures safety from multiple angles and directions. The vehicle is now available for order at BMW dealerships across South Africa, complete with the original warranty and maintenance plans.
Dr. Daniel Huber, BMW AG’s engineer for armoured vehicles, highlighted the rigorous testing undertaken in South Africa, stating, “This certification is a first for BMW on the African continent. We’ve ensured that the vehicle can resist severe attacks, providing top-notch security.”
Certification Process
The certification process involved intense scrutiny by Beschussamt Munich, an independent German authority specializing in ballistic testing. The test vehicle endured over 400 shots, including high-angle assaults, ensuring its compliance with the NIJ Level IIIA standard, making it the only vehicle in South Africa to achieve this certification.
Jaco de Kock, CEO of the SVI Group, noted, “Testing went beyond individual components; we tested the entire vehicle to address and fortify any potential vulnerabilities, ensuring maximum protection.”

Durability and Protection Features
The armoured X3 underwent a rigorous durability program, including thousands of door, boot, and window operations, along with 3,000 km of driving on various terrains. Its protection package includes an armoured passenger cell, sealed joints, and specially developed ballistic glass. Remarkably, the driver’s window can nearly fully open, distinguishing it from more restrictive armoured designs.
Despite the extensive armouring, the X3 M40i maintains the dynamic driving characteristics of its standard model, thanks to the use of lightweight materials. It features a robust 3.0-litre inline-six turbocharged engine, delivering 285 kW and 500 Nm.
Order and Conversion Process
Customers can order the armoured X3 M40i at any BMW dealership in the country, after which the standard vehicle is sent to SVI Engineering’s facility for the bespoke armouring conversion, adhering to BMW’s rigorous production standards.
Cost and Warranty
The armouring package is priced at R879,800, excluding VAT and the base vehicle cost. The conversion takes about three months, with the vehicle retaining its standard BMW warranties alongside an additional one-year/50,000 km warranty from SVI on the armouring.
This project not only enhances the security offerings in BMW’s lineup but also sets a precedent for armoured vehicle certification and production in Africa.
