Suzuki Auto South Africa is celebrating a significant milestone as the fourth-generation Swift secures a coveted spot as a finalist in the 2025 South African Car of the Year (COTY) competition. This recognition follows the model’s recent triumph as the recipient of the esteemed 2025 Automotive Researchers’ and Journalists’ Conference of Japan (RJC) Car of the Year award.
Launched in South Africa in November 2024 to widespread acclaim, the new Swift is redefining expectations in the highly competitive AB-segment. Featuring a sporty, modern design, a fuel-efficient 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine, and a recalibrated suspension system, the Swift delivers an engaging and dynamic driving experience. Built on Suzuki’s lightweight yet rigid ‘HEARTECT’ platform, the Swift boasts best-in-class safety features, including six airbags, Electronic Stability Program (ESP), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist System (BAS), and ISOFIX child seat anchor points.
The South African Car of the Year competition, now in its 39th edition, is organised by the South African Guild of Mobility Journalists (SAGMJ). The Swift will be evaluated against 16 other finalists across a rigorous set of criteria, including design, technology, engineering, innovation, safety, performance, and handling. The crucial next phase of judging takes place in March at Tshwane’s Zwartkops Raceway, where jurors will put each contender through its paces.

After the track evaluations, the competition’s final scoring round will commence, culminating in the announcement of the overall 2025 COTY winner at a prestigious gala event later in the year.
“What a fantastic way to see in 2025. We are thrilled and honoured to have the new Swift chosen as a finalist in one of our country’s most respected automotive awards,” says Brendon Carpenter, Brand Marketing Manager of Suzuki Auto South Africa. “Making it this far speaks volumes about the car’s abilities, and we hope the jurors continue to be impressed by what the little Swift has to offer as they enter the final throes of this competition. Everyone here at Suzuki is holding thumbs for what lies ahead!”
Adding to its growing list of accolades, the Swift was also named a Top 10 finalist in the 2025 World Car of the Year and a Top 5 finalist in the 2025 World Urban Car category (for vehicles measuring no longer than 4.25 metres), presented by the World Car Awards. Since its establishment in 2004, the World Car Awards has recognised excellence in automotive innovation, with a panel of 96 esteemed automotive journalists from 30 countries evaluating eligible models sold across multiple continents.
As the competition progresses, Suzuki Auto South Africa eagerly anticipates the final results, hoping that the Swift’s outstanding performance and well-rounded attributes will propel it to ultimate victory.
