Subaru Southern Africa is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Toshimitsu Tanaka as its new Managing Director, effective 1 August 2025. This significant leadership change comes as Mr. Andrew Marshall steps down after five impactful years at the helm, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and strategic growth.
A respected figure in the global automotive industry, Mr. Tanaka brings more than three decades of experience to his new role. His journey across Africa, North America, and Asia has equipped him with a rich understanding of the nuances and demands of diverse automotive markets. Over the past two years, he has served as Deputy Managing Director at Subaru Southern Africa, fostering strong relationships across the organisation and laying the groundwork for the brand’s next phase of evolution.
Prior to joining Subaru, Mr. Tanaka held a series of senior leadership roles within the Toyota Tsusho Group. His résumé includes notable positions such as Assistant General Manager for Toyota Tsusho Africa, Group Manager at Toyota Tsusho Corporation in Japan, and Vice Division Head at Toyota Tsusho America. A defining moment in his career came when he spearheaded the establishment of Toyota Tsusho Africa’s facilities in Durban — a project that showcased his commitment to innovation, operational excellence, and strategic vision.

With his deep expertise in international automotive operations and a strong grasp of the South African market, Mr. Tanaka is exceptionally well placed to guide Subaru Southern Africa through a dynamic and opportunity-rich landscape.
“It’s a great honour to take the helm at Subaru Southern Africa,” Mr. Tanaka remarked. “This is a brand that represents confidence, adventure, and loyalty — not only in the products we build but in the people we serve. My focus will be on expanding our presence and enhancing the customer experience across the region. I look forward to working closely with our dealer network, our partners, and — most importantly — our customers, to take Subaru to even greater heights.”
Mr. Tanaka’s appointment heralds a new era for Subaru Southern Africa — one that promises continued growth, innovation, and an even deeper connection with a loyal and ever-evolving customer base. As the automotive sector shifts to meet the demands of a more connected, eco-conscious, and experience-driven world, Subaru’s new leadership is poised to chart a course that stays true to the brand’s adventurous spirit while embracing the future.
