The Cradle of Humankind on the outskirts of Johannesburg played host to a Subaru charity ride in aid of the LumoHawk Foundation on Saturday 10 January. As part of Subaru Southern Africa’s ongoing commitment to the cycling fraternity, the event embodied the brand’s partnership with local cycling ace Daryl Impey – the first African to wear the revered yellow jersey in the Tour de France.
Underpinned by founder Joel Stransky – whom in his own right is also a South African sporting hero after having scored the infamous Rugby World Cup-winning kick in 1995 – the LumoHawk Foundation seeks to support the educational and sporting needs of previously disadvantaged children and their communities in South Africa.
With the invitation extended to Subaru clients and cyclists alike, the event began at the serene Kloofzicht Lodge in Muldersdrift, where Impey and Stransky led the group onto the majestic roads of the Cradle of Humankind, for a 50 km ride. Upon return, breakfast and a charity auction were lined up which enabled the cyclists to mingle with the two sporting greats. Up for grabs – two framed items of signed Daryl Impey memorabilia, including the yellow jersey worn in the 2013 Tour de France.
With Stransky as auctioneer the two items were successfully auctioned off, with all event proceeds collated and donated to the LumoHawk Foundation – an impressive R30 000 which will be put towards a new MTB Academy in Muldersdrift.
