London, 24 July 2025 – As millions of Brits prepare for the great summer getaway, new research from eBay reveals a surprising gap in motorists’ confidence when it comes to safely installing roof-mounted accessories—posing a risk not only to their holiday plans but also to their wallets and driving licences.
According to the study, over half of UK drivers (54%) admit to feeling unsure about correctly fitting roof boxes, while nearly a third (31%) own either a roof box or a cycle rack. Even more concerning, 58% were unaware that an incorrectly installed accessory could result in fines of up to £2,500 and three penalty points on their licence.
Under Section 40A of the Road Traffic Act 1998, improperly secured loads can be classed as a dangerous driving offence, putting other road users at risk. Yet despite this, just 7% of motorists take the time to check their roof box or cycle rack before a trip. In comparison, drivers were far more diligent about checking tyre pressure (70%) and oil or water levels (62%).
This oversight becomes even more alarming when considering that 23% of motorists use roof accessories at least a few times a week—suggesting a regular pattern of potentially unsafe use.

Help at Hand: eBay’s My Garage Makes It Easier
To help motorists ensure they’re fitting the correct equipment, eBay is encouraging use of its ‘My Garage’ tool, which allows customers to enter their vehicle’s registration number (or make and model) to find only the accessories that fit their specific vehicle.
“Roof racks, boxes and cycle racks are a great way to maximise luggage space for summer holiday road trips,” says Abir Tewari, UK Director of Commercial Operations, Parts & Accessories at eBay. “eBay’s My Garage function is specifically designed to put motorists at ease, by helping them find precisely the right accessory for their vehicle.”
For added peace of mind, eBay also offers ‘Assured Fit’ on eligible parts and accessories. If an item purchased doesn’t fit, customers can return it for free within 30 days and receive a full refund.
Tewari adds, “Installation is often straightforward, but we advise motorists to take their time when fitting new accessories, follow the instructions, and make sure their load is securely attached before setting off.”
Don’t Let a Roof Box Ruin the Holiday
As more Brits take to the roads in search of sunshine and seaside views, a poorly mounted roof box could prove to be an expensive mistake. eBay’s message is clear: with the right tools and a little preparation, drivers can travel safer and smarter this summer.
