smart is once again redrawing the boundaries of urban mobility, offering a first glimpse into its next chapter with the unveiling of initial design sketches and detail visuals of the smart Concept #2. The reveal signals not just a new model, but a renewed interpretation of one of the brand’s most recognisable ideas: the compact two-seater city car that once reshaped how cities move.

Rooted in the spirit of the original smart fortwo, the Concept carries forward its compact DNA while transforming it into something far more expressive and emotionally charged. It is positioned as the first clear design expression of the upcoming all-electric smart #2, a vehicle that aims to reintroduce the idea of the city car not as a compromise, but as a personal statement. In this vision, functionality is no longer hidden beneath form; it becomes part of the aesthetic language itself.

The design direction is unmistakably fashion-led. A matte white exterior is paired with warm gold accents, creating a refined contrast that feels closer to modern couture than conventional automotive styling. Fine detailing, including precision buckles and subtle leather applications, introduces a tactile richness that elevates the compact silhouette. Rather than overwhelming the senses, the design strips back excess, allowing purity of shape to become a canvas for individuality. It is minimalist, but never empty; restrained, yet intentionally expressive.

This approach reflects smart’s “Love, Pure, Unexpected” philosophy, which continues to guide its evolution under the signature design language developed by the Mercedes-Benz Global Design Team. The Concept stands as a reminder that compact mobility can still carry emotional weight, blending heritage cues with a future-facing electric identity. It is a reinterpretation rather than a reinvention from scratch, preserving familiarity while pushing it into a more expressive, lifestyle-oriented space.

The timing of the reveal is also significant. smart will present the Concept in greater detail at its exclusive “Change of Perspectives” Global Brand Event in Beijing on 22 April, followed by a major showcase at Auto Beijing 2026. Together, these stages form the backdrop for what is being positioned as the brand’s most ambitious product expansion to date, signalling a broader shift in how smart intends to engage global markets.

Alongside the Concept #2, smart will also unveil the smart EHD, a completely new addition to its portfolio and its first-ever premium fastback sedan. Styled under the direction of the Mercedes-Benz AG Global Design Team, the model introduces a more assertive interpretation of elegance and sportiness, tailored exclusively for the Chinese market. It represents a deliberate move into a higher segment, expanding smart’s identity beyond compact urban mobility into premium electric sedans with distinct market positioning.

Both vehicles are unified under the same design philosophy, even as they target very different audiences. The Concept speaks to intimacy, individuality and the distilled essence of city living, while the EHD explores presence, performance and sophistication at a larger scale. Together, they demonstrate how smart intends to stretch its design language across multiple segments without losing coherence.

At the centre of this evolution is a broader repositioning of the brand itself. Through its “Change of Perspectives” campaign, smart is encouraging audiences to rethink long-held assumptions about what urban mobility should look and feel like. This is not just about new vehicles, but about reshaping perception, challenging the idea that compact must mean limited, or that efficiency must come at the expense of desirability.

As smart continues to expand its global footprint, supported by its European operations and international joint venture structure, the brand is clearly entering a new phase. With the Concept and EHD acting as early markers of this direction, the message is clear: the future of smart mobility will be more diverse, more expressive, and more emotionally charged than ever before.
