Milton Keynes, UK – September 2, 2025 – smart has officially confirmed that an all-new two-seater city car, the smart #2, is in development. Scheduled for its global debut in late 2026, the #2 will carry forward the legacy of the original fortwo while delivering a modern, all-electric interpretation of the compact urban mobility icon.
Designed as a stylish and efficient entry into the A-segment, the smart #2 expands the brand’s award-winning portfolio, joining the existing smart #1 and #3, as well as the soon-to-launch #5 SUV. Together, these models reflect smart’s ambition to cover a wide spectrum of customer needs, from agile city cars to premium SUVs.
Reinventing an Urban Classic
The #2 is being developed as part of “project: two,” a feasibility study that confirmed demand for a next-generation two-seater city car. Staying true to the values of the original fortwo launched 27 years ago, the smart #2 will offer a compact footprint, cutting-edge EV technology, and a renewed emphasis on urban freedom.
Styled by the Mercedes-Benz Design team, the car will feature new technologies tailored for everyday city living, reinforcing smart’s position as a pioneer of innovative mobility solutions. Production will take place in China, supported by the engineering expertise of joint shareholders Mercedes-Benz and Geely, along with strong investment partnerships.

A Strategic Milestone for smart
Dirk Adelmann, CEO smart Europe, described the announcement as a turning point for the brand:
“The confirmation of our ‘project: two’ and the upcoming launch of the smart #2 marks a milestone moment for the smart brand on a global scale. The smart #2 will shape a new era of individual urban automobility, especially in classic smart cities like Rome, London or Paris. The decision comes at the right time, as we benefit from the respective strengths of our main shareholders Mercedes-Benz and Geely, and strong backing by new investors, along with the successful market launch of the smart #5. The new smart #2 will be a unique, authentic addition to the all-electric product portfolio of smart in Europe.”
Expanding the Future of Urban Mobility
With Europe identified as the primary market, the smart #2 is expected to resonate strongly in dense metropolitan areas where compact size, sustainability, and premium design are highly valued. By complementing the larger smart #5 SUV and the versatile #1 and #3, the #2 ensures that smart customers will have a cohesive range of electric vehicles designed to meet the full spectrum of mobility needs.
As the global automotive industry accelerates towards electrification, the arrival of the smart #2 in 2026 will not only reinvent an icon of city driving but also cement smart’s role as a leader in rethinking what premium electric mobility means for urban lifestyles.
