Gloucestershire, UK – 03 July 2025 – As the electric vehicle (EV) revolution accelerates, one British manufacturer is urging both consumers and the wider industry to take a hard look at the environmental cost of short-lived charging technology. Simpson & Partners, a leading sustainable EV charger manufacturer based in the Cotswolds, has launched a campaign that challenges the disposable design mindset prevalent in today’s home charger market—and it comes with a solution engineered to last.

Amidst the rapid evolution of EV and charging technology, co-founder Mandy Simpson warns that the very infrastructure designed to support green transport is at risk of undermining its sustainability promise. “It’s time consumers knew the truth about charger lifespans—and some won’t last as long as the electric cars they charge,” she says. “Building the electric vehicle infrastructure is crucial to encourage greater EV uptake, but not if the chargers can’t be updated. An S&P charger will not end up in landfill; they are engineered and designed to last.”

According to Simpson & Partners, over 100,000 home EV chargers could be discarded and sent to landfill by 2030 in the UK alone, primarily because many current models are sealed units with no upgrade path—rendering them obsolete as technology standards progress. This throwaway culture not only contradicts the sustainable ethos of the electric vehicle movement but also poses a growing environmental concern.

At the heart of Simpson & Partners’ counter-approach is its design philosophy: build products to endure, adapt, and evolve. Unlike sealed units, their chargers feature robust, weatherproof housings that are fully serviceable and upgradeable—both in hardware and software. This means their devices can keep pace with innovations, from smart energy tariffs to bidirectional vehicle-to-grid (V2G) functionality, without being replaced.

Today, the company takes another stride in sustainable innovation with the launch of its Home Series Gen V3 EV charger, a first-of-its-kind home charger built to support V2G charging. This capability will allow energy to flow not just into the vehicle, but back into the grid—paving the way for homeowners to store renewable energy and potentially earn money by selling unused electricity during peak demand.

The company is also celebrating the successful accreditation of its Gen 2 and Gen 3 chargers for Intelligent Octopus Go, an innovative energy tariff that delivers six hours of discounted, green electricity every night. With smart scheduling and the Octopus Intelligent Drive pack—available for £30 per month and offering unlimited smart charging—drivers can optimise their EV usage around the cheapest and cleanest times of day, regardless of which car they drive.

David Simpson, Co-Founder and COO, remarked: “We are very excited that our new chargers are fully accredited with the Intelligent Octopus Go energy tariff, which makes light work of charging an EV when prices are most competitive. It opens up mass-market smart charging that’s inclusive, effective, and ready for whatever car you drive. Additionally, with our vehicle-to-grid capability, customers will in future have the opportunity to earn cash when sending energy back to the grid.”

He also credited Octopus Energy’s technology arm, Kraken, for their seamless collaboration: “A huge thanks to the Kraken and Octopus teams for working together with us to deliver the benefits of Intelligent Octopus Go to our loyal customers.”

True to its word, Simpson & Partners is also offering existing customers a cost-effective way to benefit from this innovation. All customers who purchased a charger since June 2022 can upgrade their units for just £49 to enable V2G functionality. Gen 1 owners can access Intelligent Octopus Go compatibility for £165, making sustainability accessible even for early adopters.

Mandy Simpson adds, “Transparency and sustainability are core to our business, as is being cost-conscious for real-world users. It matters to us that we build long-term relationships with our customers by ensuring their Simpson & Partners charger continues to be the best in the marketplace. We refuse to design, engineer, and manufacture products that just end up in landfill. It really should not be happening in our journey to a more sustainable world.”

As electric vehicles become a fixture of daily life, Simpson & Partners is leading a critical industry conversation: if we are to truly embrace a low-emissions future, the infrastructure supporting it must be as sustainable as the vehicles themselves. By offering future-proofed, upgradeable technology with enduring value, Simpson & Partners is not only keeping chargers out of landfill—it’s building a smarter, cleaner energy future one driveway at a time.
