SEAT & CUPRA have officially started series production of battery systems at their Martorell plant, marking a decisive step in the company’s transformation toward electrification. These batteries will power the upcoming CUPRA Raval and the Volkswagen ID.Polo, both part of the Brand Group Core’s Electric Urban Car Family. The move positions Martorell as a flexible automotive powerhouse, fully equipped to produce electric, hybrid, and efficient combustion vehicles in a rapidly evolving mobility landscape.
At the heart of these battery systems is the Volkswagen Group’s Unified Cell technology, a global platform that allows scalability, speed, and flexibility across brands, regions, and vehicle segments. Each battery system combines advanced cells for energy storage with sophisticated electronics that manage and optimize performance. The E Box, considered the brain of the system, is entirely produced at SEAT & CUPRA’s El Prat Components facility, which has transitioned from decades of gearbox production to become a key supplier of EV components.
The Martorell battery assembly plant can produce up to 1,200 battery systems per day, equivalent to one battery every 45 seconds, and has the capacity to manufacture 300,000 units annually. Its operations combine automation and skilled manual labour across two parallel lines, using cell-to-pack technology to improve efficiency. Each day, the plant produces 3,600 stacks through nearly half a million welding points, followed by rigorous quality checks before the batteries are transported directly to the CUPRA Raval and Volkswagen ID.Polo production lines via a 600-metre automated bridge.
In less than two years, SEAT & CUPRA built the 64,000 m² facility with 500 highly trained employees and 11,000 solar panels on its roof, supplying 70% of the electricity needed for assembly and significantly reducing environmental impact. This milestone strengthens Europe’s battery industry and underlines Spain’s role as a hub for electric mobility.
With the launch of the CUPRA Raval, the first 100% electric vehicle produced in Martorell, SEAT & CUPRA enter a new era. The company is at the forefront of the Volkswagen Group’s Electric Urban Car Family, combining design, development, manufacturing, and marketing under one roof. Through the €10 billion Future: Fast Forward project, SEAT & CUPRA are transforming Spain into a European centre for electric vehicles, ensuring the country plays a leading role in the continent’s transition to sustainable mobility.
SEAT & CUPRA, a key member of the Volkswagen Group, sell vehicles under both SEAT and CUPRA brands, including the iconic SEAT Ibiza and bestselling CUPRA Formentor. With over 13,000 employees across three production centres in Martorell, El Prat de Llobregat, and Barcelona, the company exports more than 80% of its vehicles to over 70 countries, solidifying its position as a cornerstone of Spain’s automotive industry and the driving force behind the nation’s electrification.
