Ashford, UK, 28 January 2026 – A singular opportunity has emerged for Ferrari enthusiasts and collectors alike: a carefully curated collection of five historic Ferrari models, each marking a pivotal moment in the evolution of the iconic Italian marque. Dubbed ‘Scuderia ’89 – The Pursuit for Paddle’, this extraordinary assemblage charts the journey of Ferrari’s revolutionary paddle-shift transmission from Formula 1 prototype to road-going supercar legend.
Presented by Furlonger, one of the UK’s foremost specialists in Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and Bugattis, in collaboration with European partner Egon Zweimüller, the collection is being offered exclusively as a single lot, with an estimated value in excess of £20 million.
At its heart, Scuderia ’89 celebrates the intersection of Ferrari’s racing innovation and road car ambition. The collection begins with the 1988 Ferrari 639 F1, a factory prototype developed to test the semi-automatic, paddle-shift transmission that would transform racing and eventually define Ferrari road cars. Following this is the 1989 Ferrari 640 F1, the first Formula 1 car to race with the new gearbox, driven by Gerhard Berger in the 1989 World Championship. These cars are more than metal and mechanics; they represent Ferrari’s bold leap into a new era of driver-focused technology.
The collection also features three of Ferrari’s most celebrated road cars. The 1989 F40 embodies the raw, visceral thrill of the supercar at its 1980s peak, while the 1996 F50 showcases the lineage of Ferrari’s racing engines, tracing roots back to the V12s in the 639 and 640 F1 cars. Completing the collection is a 1998 F355 Spider, the first road-going Ferrari to feature a paddle-shift gearbox, bridging the divide between Formula 1 innovation and everyday driving pleasure.
Simon Furlonger, Founder and Managing Director of Furlonger Specialist Cars, commented: “We’ve assembled some of the most iconic and significant race and road cars in Ferrari’s history. These models define the dawn of a new era, when Ferrari harnessed its Formula 1 know-how for its road cars like never before. And of course, the 639 and 640 laid the foundations for the dominant Schumacher years that would follow in the early 2000s.”
1988 Ferrari 639 F1 (Chassis #106)
The 639 is the only Tipo 639 in private hands, developed to test Ferrari’s Tipo 035 3.5-litre V12 and pioneering paddle-shift transmission. After nearly a decade at the factory, it entered private ownership in 1999. Maintained to the highest standards, with works completed by Ferrari Classiche, it remains fully driveable and has been showcased at prestigious venues such as Goodwood and Silverstone.
1989 Ferrari 640 F1 (Chassis #110)
Chassis #110 made history as the first Formula 1 car to race with a paddle-shift transmission, piloted by Gerhard Berger at several Grand Prix events during the 1989 season. After its competitive life, it underwent complete restoration and achieved Ferrari Classiche certification. In recent years, it has been reunited with Berger for display laps at the 2024 Goodwood Members Meeting and awarded the Chairman’s Trophy at the 2025 Pebble Beach Concours.
1989 Ferrari F40
Renowned as the archetypal supercar, this F40 is the most successful UK-based racing example, one of just 30 in the period. Finished in Rosso Corsa and returned to original factory specification, it has covered only 24,000 kilometers. Its pedigree makes it suitable both as a road-going icon and as a competition-ready vehicle for events such as Historic Le Mans or the 6 Hours of Spa.
1996 Ferrari F50
One of only 25 UK-supplied examples, this F50 is highly original, featuring its signature ‘original weave’ and a complete set of accessories including both removable roofs, travel case, and tool kit. Finished in Rosso Corsa and with just 14,000 miles, it represents a rare, meticulously preserved example of Ferrari’s F1-inspired road cars.
1998 Ferrari F355 Spider
This Rosso Corsa F355 Spider is among the first road Ferraris to feature a paddle-shift gearbox, and one of 139 UK-supplied examples. Covering just 5,500 miles, it comes with full documentation, tools, and exceptional provenance.
The Scuderia ’89 – The Pursuit for Paddle collection offers a once-in-a-lifetime chance to own a group of cars that collectively narrate a story of technological innovation and Ferrari’s relentless pursuit of performance excellence. These vehicles are only available for purchase as a complete set, and viewings can be arranged through Furlonger or Egon Zweimüller.
