Before embarking on a long journey, conducting a comprehensive vehicle inspection is as essential as packing your bags. “Approximately 14.1% of accidents are attributed to mechanical failures, underscoring the critical need for ensuring vehicles are in optimal condition,” Herbert points out. Key components to check include wiper condition, engine oil and fluid levels, brake thickness (ideally above 3.2mm), tire condition and pressure, and operational lights.

Careful route planning is paramount. “Include regular breaks (approximately every two hours or according to personal limits) to rest and refresh. Choosing departure times strategically can help avoid peak traffic or driving at night, which presents additional risks,” Herbert advises. “Planning routes also helps steer clear of construction zones and areas known for higher crime rates. For longer journeys, consider overnight stops to split the driving and enhance safety.”
Packing Essentials
Packing goes beyond clothes and essentials; it includes items crucial for road safety. “Ensure your vehicle is equipped with a basic first aid kit, jumper cables, and emergency tire repair tools,” Herbert suggests. “Pack entertainment for children, such as games and books, and prepare nutritious snacks to maintain alertness and energy levels.”
