In 2025, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars marks a monumental milestone: 100 years of Phantom. For a century, the Phantom nameplate has defined the pinnacle of luxury, a benchmark against which all else is measured. Across continents and decades, this flagship model has showcased what can be achieved when the rarest and most precious materials are entrusted to the hands of master craftspeople.
To honour this centenary, Rolls-Royce is preparing to reveal an exclusive Private Collection, featuring a level of woodwork sophistication never before seen in the marque’s history. This landmark interior introduces three Rolls-Royce firsts: 3D marquetry, 3D ink layering, and 24-carat gold leafing. These techniques push the boundaries of wood as a medium, transforming each panel into a tactile, sculptural narrative of Phantom’s legendary journeys.
“Our Bespoke Collective of designers, craftspeople and engineers are exceptional at what they do. To honour Phantom in its centenary year, they pioneered groundbreaking techniques in their mastery of wood, combining 3D ink layering, 3D marquetry and gilding within a single surface. These intricate processes push materials to the limits of their natural tolerance, transforming each panel into a stunning, tactile sculpture,” said Phil Fabre de la Grange, Head of Bespoke, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars.
Sculpting History: The Pinnacle of Craft
The interior doors of the forthcoming Private Collection represent the most complex and detailed woodwork Rolls-Royce has ever produced. Every line, contour, and texture has been painstakingly developed over a year-long process, ensuring that the medium of veneer is pushed to its sculptural limits, just as Phantom has always pushed the definition of automotive excellence.
Each composition is a story etched into Blackwood panels, capturing landscapes, geographical maps, winding routes, floral elements, and even experimental models, all woven into a single, flowing tapestry. Oversized veneer sheets were specially commissioned to accommodate Phantom’s expansive doors. The grain of each sheet is carefully chosen to interact with light, revealing new details and textures with every glance.
To preserve the purity of the artwork, metal speaker grilles were replaced by small openings milled directly into the wood, while the panels were uniformly stained to ensure an even, radiant finish.
Laser-Etched Narratives
Central to the design are laser-etched motifs, rendered at three distinct depths to create a subtle interplay of light and shadow. Deeper etches appear darker, offering contrast against the reflective veneer, and infusing the panels with a sense of movement and dynamism. Every curve and contour carries echoes of Phantom’s century-long story, inviting discovery and reflection.
Layered Intricacy: 3D Ink and Marquetry
In complement to the recessed etching, Rolls-Royce artisans have developed 3D ink layering, a technique that builds fine textures directly onto the wood surface in successive, precise layers. This approach allows each detail to emerge gradually, adding depth and clarity to the storytelling.
The innovation continues with 3D marquetry. Raised motifs, enhanced by engraving and 3D ink layering, rise above the main wood surface, enabling the history of Phantom to be explored as much by touch as by sight. This three-dimensional approach transforms each panel into a tactile landscape, inviting occupants to engage intimately with the interior.

Golden Threads: The Art of Gilding
Perhaps the most dazzling innovation is the introduction of 24-carat gold leafing. Drawing on centuries-old cabinet-making traditions, Rolls-Royce artisans adapted this delicate craft to meet the rigorous demands of automotive interiors. Five specialists from the Interior Surface Centre undertook advanced training at West Dean College, mastering the precise handwork required.
Gold leaf, only 0.1 micrometres thick, is meticulously applied to depict roads across the map sections, creating luminous threads that trace Phantom’s legendary journeys. Each square is sealed with a protective, high-gloss coating, producing an effect that is as durable as it is breathtaking.
A New Era in Bespoke Craft
In its complexity, precision, and visual impact, this interior woodwork represents a profound evolution in contemporary craft—a new frontier in Rolls-Royce Bespoke. It is fitting that these extraordinary innovations will debut on a Private Collection celebrating Phantom, the model that embodies the ultimate in automotive luxury.
Through the artistry of its Bespoke Collective, Rolls-Royce has not only honoured a century of Phantom but has redefined what is possible when imagination, technology, and craftsmanship converge. In this remarkable centenary celebration, every detail is a story, every surface a testament to the extraordinary dedication of those who bring Phantom to life.
