In a move that underscores its commitment to community and sustainability, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has proudly announced the reopening of the newly surfaced Footpath 416, a key public right of way linking the neighbouring villages of Westerton and Westhampnett, located near the Home of Rolls-Royce in Goodwood, West Sussex. This revitalized path, which had long been plagued by winter mud and impassability, now features an all-weather surface, making it accessible to all users, all year round.

The opening ceremony, held on 31 August 2024, coincided with the start of the new school year, providing local pupils from Westerton a traffic-free, pedestrian-friendly route to The March CE Primary School in Westhampnett. For the first time, children and families can walk this historic path without the inconvenience of mud and difficult terrain, ensuring a smooth and clean journey in all seasons. This improvement is especially welcome for those with limited mobility, who can now enjoy full access to the route.

Footpath 416 has long been a beloved passage for local residents, but the natural conditions of the soil made it nearly unusable during the wet winter months. With the funding and support of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, this critical local route has been transformed into a valuable community asset. The durable, weatherproof surface ensures that walkers, families, and schoolchildren can benefit from a safe and enjoyable passage, while the path retains its natural charm, seamlessly integrating with the surrounding landscape.

The enhancements to Footpath 416 are set to have a broader impact, with plans in motion to link it with the nearby Footpath 417. This connection will create a new ‘clean boot’ circular walking route around the Parish, offering locals and visitors alike an extended opportunity to explore the picturesque countryside of West Sussex. The community-focused project was undertaken entirely at Rolls-Royce’s expense, over and above the company’s planning obligations for the new extension currently under construction at their Goodwood site.

Rolls Royce Motor Cars Enhances Local Community With Revamped Footpath 416

Andrew Ball, Head of Corporate Relations and Heritage at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, emphasized the significance of this contribution, stating: “The new, all-weather surface transforms this public right of way into a year-round community asset with vastly increased accessibility and amenity value, while retaining its fundamental vernacular character and place within the local landscape. It is our contribution to our neighbours and the community we’re so proud to be part of.”

This project marks a meaningful contribution to the local community, offering practical benefits and demonstrating Rolls-Royce’s continued dedication to supporting the region. Beyond meeting its obligations, the marque has chosen to enhance the lives of those living and working near its Goodwood base, creating lasting improvements for residents, walkers, and visitors.

While the resurfacing of Footpath 416 is a notable enhancement, it is just one facet of Rolls-Royce’s broader initiative to bolster the local environment and community. The company’s site extension, now under construction, represents the first significant expansion of their facilities since the Home of Rolls-Royce opened in 2003. This development is crucial for the future of Rolls-Royce, sustaining over 2,500 jobs at the Goodwood site and supporting a further 7,500 roles within the wider supply chain. The company’s contributions to the local and national economy are substantial, injecting over half a billion pounds into the UK economy annually, with 20% of that staying within Chichester and West Sussex.

With Footpath 416 now more accessible than ever, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars continues to set a benchmark for community engagement, environmental responsibility, and local partnership. This initiative is a testament to the brand’s commitment to preserving the heritage and beauty of its surrounding area while fostering a positive impact on future generations.
