In a spectacular showcase of engineering and design, Richard Mille has unveiled the RM 65-01 McLaren Automatic Split-Seconds Chronograph W1, marking the fourth creation from its celebrated partnership with British luxury supercar and elite motorsports company, McLaren. This latest timepiece draws inspiration from the new McLaren W1 supercar, a groundbreaking successor to the legendary McLaren F1 and P1TM, propelling the storied lineage of the McLaren ‘1’ series into new realms of performance and innovation.
A Watch Inspired by Excellence
The RM 65-01 McLaren W1 is a tribute to the shared ethos of Richard Mille and McLaren: an unyielding pursuit of performance, where passion and human connection fuel every creation. The design brief for this timepiece demanded a reflection of the car’s cutting-edge features—its shape, materials, and functionality—echoing the supercar’s inherent drive to push the boundaries of automotive excellence.
The Heart of the RM 65-01: A High-Performance Movement
At the core of the RM 65-01 McLaren W1 lies Richard Mille’s most advanced automatic chronograph movement, the RMAC4, which operates at a remarkable frequency of 5Hz, translating to 36,000 vibrations per hour. This elevated rate allows the split-seconds chronograph to measure elapsed times with unparalleled precision, accurate to one-tenth of a second. The movement features a vertical clutch and two six-column wheels, ensuring smooth and precise chronograph activation—a nod to McLaren’s commitment to flawless performance.
Further emphasizing speed, the RM 65-01 incorporates a rapid winding system, allowing the watch to achieve a full 60-hour power reserve in minimal time via a push piece crafted from vibrant orange Quartz TPT®. Built for daily wear, the movement’s 480 components are engineered for robustness, complemented by a variable geometry winding rotor that adapts to the wearer’s lifestyle.

Bespoke Design: A Unique Aesthetic
The RM 65-01 McLaren W1 is a feat of technical complexity and design artistry. Its Carbon TPT® case, measuring 43.84 x 49.94 x 16.19 mm, draws direct inspiration from the W1’s aerodynamic lines. Early in the supercar’s development, the Richard Mille design team, led by Creative and Development Director Cécile Guenat, had access to initial clay mock-ups, which informed the watch’s aesthetic from an overhead perspective.
The design team faced the monumental challenge of creating an indented ‘double’ bezel that mirrors the compact yet muscular silhouette of the W1. It required nine months of meticulous craftsmanship, during which eight prototypes were developed. The result is an elegant bezel that is just 0.5 millimeters thick at its thinnest point—the slimmest bezel ever produced by Richard Mille.
A new skeletonised titanium dial design echoes the patterns of the McLaren’s wheel rims, while vibrant colors synonymous with the brand invoke the sensation of a supercar dashboard, enhancing both style and functionality.
Intuitive Functionality for Driving Enthusiasts
True to its ethos as a driver’s watch, the RM 65-01 McLaren W1 features an innovative ‘function selector’ crown, reminiscent of a car’s transmission selector. This crown allows the wearer to effortlessly switch between three positions: W for “winding,” D for “date,” and H for “hand-setting.” Crafted from grade 5 titanium and adorned with a rubber coating in McLaren’s iconic papaya orange, the crown reflects the brand’s performance heritage.
Every detail of the watch—from the shape of the chronograph push pieces to the rapid winding button—has been inspired by the intricacies of McLaren supercars, including elements from lightweight seating designs. The papaya orange rubber strap features aerodynamic patterns that further enhance the watch’s dynamic aesthetic.

A Perfect Union of Craftsmanship and Performance
As Andrea Bermudez, Global Marketing Director at McLaren Automotive, aptly summarizes, “The W1 was designed to give the driver everything they need and nothing they don’t.” The RM 65-01 McLaren W1 encapsulates this philosophy, marrying epic power delivery with an exhilarating driving experience.
Julien Boillat, Casing Technical Director at Richard Mille, expresses the growing synergy between the two brands: “Making this fourth watch in the series left us with the feeling that Richard Mille and McLaren are perfectly in tune. Our collaboration has strengthened, as we both strive for the highest technical standards and ergonomic excellence.”
In a world where performance and luxury intertwine, the RM 65-01 McLaren Automatic Split-Seconds Chronograph W1 stands as a testament to the relentless pursuit of excellence—both on the road and on the wrist.
