The Renault Scénic launched the compact multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) craze in 1996, and it remains at the forefront of this sector as a segment leader internationally, and in South Africa.

Now, Renault has introduced a raft of enhancements to the range, encompassing cosmetic, functional and safety upgrades that make it more appealing than ever.

“The Renault Scénic has embodied the essence of the compact MPV sector for the past 15 years, and it remains a top seller around the world, due to its best-in-class ergonomics, spaciousness and outstanding level of standard features,” says Renault SA Managing Director, Xavier Gobille.

“With the latest updates to the range, we have reinforced these virtues by increasing the specification levels, enhancing the style, refining the functionality and bolstering the safety equipment, while offering exceptional value for money. Once again, this makes it the most compelling choice in the compact MPV class.”

EXTERIOR

Over the past decade-and-a-half, the Renault Scénic has become a popular sight on SA roads, offering the compact proportions and driving agility typically associated with a hatchback, matched to the exceptional versatility of a multi-purpose vehicle.

This has made it a front-line choice for family buyers in particular, as well as those demanding a high level of space, comfort and functionality.

The latest Scénic raises the stakes even further on the style front by adding subtle yet effective enhancements to an already attractive shape.

Noticeably, the Expression derivative gains an upmarket edge through the use of dark metal finishes on the door handles, tailgate bar and front bumper décor to mirror the appeal of the high-spec derivatives. Additionally, the side protection mouldings are now colour-coded to impart a more refined appearance.

Providing a significant boost to driving ease-of-use, front and rear parking sensors are now fitted across the board, replacing the rear-only system provided in the outgoing Expression. In addition, the range-topping Dynamique Plus gains 17-inch alloy wheels as standard.

The list of optional items includes dark-tinted rear windows, metallic paint and – in the case of the Dynamique Plus models – a panoramic sunroof, the Xenon headlight pack, as well as a rear-view parking camera.

Finally, the colour palette has been expanded with the introduction of two new metallic choices: Pearl white and Starry black.

INTERIOR

The practical yet welcoming cabin of the Scénic has always been one of its main attractions, and the revisions applied to the latest versions make it even more alluring space for the driver and occupants alike.

The Expression level benefits from new ‘Erevan’ dark carbon upholstery, which incorporates an innovative Teflon treatment. Although the appearance and feel of the fabric is no different to standard upholstery, its anti-stain and anti-soiling properties protect the seats from water and oil stains, and provide greater resistance to marking and dust.

Emphasising its top-spec status, the Dynamique Plus models boast full leather trim, with the added convenience of electric adjustment for the front seats. The gear knob also features leather trim with eye-catching stitching on top.

New to the Expression derivative are the satin chrome decorative dashboard mouldings for the air vents, while a classic black enamel finish on the Dynamique Plus creates a more sophisticated ambience.

In both cases, the pioneering and customisable colour TFT instrument display incorporates an enhanced ‘Eco-Drive’ function to encourage a more efficient driving style. The updated system includes a graphic representation of instantaneous fuel consumption, superimposed on the average consumption reading.

The gear change indicator is also more visible, and the pictogram becomes larger and changes colour after six seconds in order to prompt the driver to change gear. Additionally, a journey report is displayed when the engine is switched off, to help the driver improve his or her eco-friendly driving style.

Renault continues to pioneer the fitment of integrated in-car navigation, with the latest version of the award-winning Carminat TomTom system included as standard specification, including on the 1.6 Expression for the first time.

The uprated Carminat TomTom Live features more extensive connectivity that includes HD Traffic for up-to-the-minute traffic information, fixed camera warnings, real-time weather information as well as Google Local Search functionality. The ‘Live’ system includes a free three-month trial period, after which an annual subscription ensures ongoing access.

Additionally, the functionality of the TomTom system has been improved with a clearer image and a more intuitive address input for greater ease of use.

SAFETY

Renault enjoys a best-in-class reputation for active and passive safety, and the Scénic is no exception.

Electronic stability programme (ESP), which includes ASR anti-skid regulation, is now included on the range from the 1.6 Expression.

Furthermore, curtain airbags are included on both Dynamique models, along with the existing front and side airbags, ensures the highest level of occupant impact protection.

MODEL RANGE

With its enhanced styling and significantly improved list of standard features, the latest Scénic is a more enticing proposition than ever. It remains one of the most spacious and versatile vehicles on the market, with its dazzling array of clever storage areas and its best-in-class roominess and comfort.

Yet it also stands out by virtue of the exceptional driving dynamics courtesy of the accurate steering control, refined suspension, outstanding braking ability and brisk performance offered by the two engines.

The 1.6 16v Expression employs the latest version of Renault’s popular fuel-injected 1 598 cc engine. It delivers solid low-down torque and flexibility, matched to impressive top-end performance.

The four-cylinder is credited with 83 kW of power at 6 000 r/min, allied to 151 Nm of torque at 4 250 r/min. Driving through a six-speed manual gearbox, this allows for a 0-100 km/h time of 11,7 sec and a 185 km/h top speed.

Overall, the 1.6 Expression is capable of a combined cycle fuel consumption of 7,5 l/100 km and a corresponding CO2 emissions rating of 174 g/km.

If it’s punchy performance and exceptional fuel economy you’re after, then the 1.9 dCi Dynamique Plus is the perfect choice – available in standard five-seater and larger seven-seater Grand Scénic configurations.

Powered by the Renault’s award-winning 1,9-litre dCi turbodiesel engine, this unit develops 96 kW at 3 750 r/min along with a mighty 300 Nm of torque from as low as 1 750 r/min. Linked to a six-speed manual, it enables a 0-100 km time of 10,6 sec (11,5 sec for Grand Scénic) and a top speed of 195 km/h.

In the combined driving cycle, the Scénic 1.9 dCi is rated at a frugal 5,5 l/100 km, while emitting just 145 g of CO2 per kilometre.

RENAULT CONFIANCE

Complete peace of mind is integral to the Renault ownership experience. Accordingly, Renault Confiance is included as standard with every model, guaranteeing industry-best levels of after-sales support.

Standard on all Scénic models is a five-year/100 000 km service plan. This is backed up by an industry leading five-year/150 000 km mechanical warranty, a six-year anti-corrosion warranty, as well as a five-year/150 000 km roadside assistance plan, supported by a ‘Stand by You’ security guard service for added peace-of-mind in the event of a breakdown.

Renault Confiance also guarantees parts availability for all models, matched to amongst the industry’s most affordable parts pricing. However, where a vehicle is immobilised through any spare parts being unavailable, the customer will be provided with a mobility solution.
