Volvo Car South Africa (VCSA) has introduced the refreshed XC90, the brand’s flagship seven-seat SUV that continues to embody Scandinavian sophistication, safety, and sustainability. With cleaner design details, a calmer cabin, and Volvo’s latest infotainment system, the updated XC90 refines everything that made it a benchmark for modern luxury.
Retaining its trademark practicality and comfort, the new XC90 arrives with a choice of electrified powertrains—a mild-hybrid (B5) and a plug-in hybrid (T8 PHEV)—each engineered to balance performance and efficiency.
Electric First for Everyday Driving
In Pure mode, the XC90 T8 plug-in hybrid offers over 70 km of electric range (WLTP), allowing most daily trips to be completed emissions-free. Real-world data shows that many plug-in hybrid drivers spend the majority of their time in electric mode, underscoring Volvo’s commitment to practical electrification.
For longer journeys, the hybrid system blends petrol and electric power seamlessly to deliver a combined range of over 800 km. When conditions demand it, the system also provides constant all-wheel drive, combining 340 kW and 709 N.m of torque for confident performance and a 0–100 km/h sprint in just 5.3 seconds. Despite its impressive power, the XC90 T8 PHEV returns a combined fuel consumption figure of 1.8 L/100 km*.
The B5 mild-hybrid variant remains a smart choice for those seeking smooth, efficient power. Its 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, assisted by a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, produces 183 kW and 350 N.m, while achieving an estimated 8.1 L/100 km. Both engines are paired with a refined eight-speed automatic transmission delivering power to all four wheels.
A Quieter, More Composed Ride
Comfort has always been central to the XC90’s appeal, and the latest model takes refinement even further. Adaptive dampers and air suspension continuously monitor the vehicle, road, and driver inputs hundreds of times per second, maintaining the ideal balance between stability and comfort.
The air suspension—now standard—can lower the SUV by 20 mm for easier access or better aerodynamics, or raise it by 40 mm for increased ground clearance. Additional sound insulation and meticulous cabin tuning deliver an even quieter ride, ideal for long-distance cruising.
Standard 21-inch wheels give the XC90 a confident stance, with 22-inch options available for those who prefer an extra visual edge.

Contemporary Cabin, Enduring Practicality
Inside, the XC90’s cabin embodies modern Scandinavian calm. A more horizontal dashboard layout, premium recycled decorative inlays, and ambient lighting combine to create an atmosphere of understated luxury. Practical updates include additional storage in the centre console, an extra cupholder, and a repositioned wireless charger for easier access.
As always, versatility remains a hallmark. With all three seating rows in place, the XC90 provides 301 litres of boot space, expanding to an impressive 1,950 litres with the second and third rows folded flat. Access to all three rows is effortless, ensuring the XC90 continues to excel as a genuine family SUV.
Music lovers can choose between the Harman Kardon Premium Sound System (standard on Plus trims) and the Bowers & Wilkins High Fidelity System (standard on Ultra), both delivering exceptional acoustic experiences.
Choice and Customisation
Both B5 MHEV and T8 PHEV models are available in Plus or Ultra trims. Regardless of choice, the XC90 comes generously equipped with four-zone climate control, a panoramic sunroof, heated steering wheel, and power-adjustable front seats with memory. Heated front and rear seats ensure every passenger enjoys the same level of comfort.
The exterior now features Matrix LED headlights flanking a redesigned grille for a more confident presence. Inside, personalisation options abound—from ventilated Nappa leather to Nordico or Navy Herringbone textile upholstery, paired with decorative inlays such as Grey Ash, Checkered Aluminium, or Backlit Light Ash. A handcrafted crystal gear lever by Orrefors adds a finishing touch of Swedish artistry.
A Smarter, More Connected Experience
At the heart of the XC90’s dashboard is Volvo’s latest 11.2-inch central touchscreen, featuring built-in Google services for seamless navigation, voice control, and connectivity. Over-the-air updates ensure that the XC90 continues to evolve throughout its lifetime, while wireless Apple CarPlay caters to every preference.
Safety You Can Count On
Safety remains the XC90’s defining strength. The SUV’s robust safety cage and advanced assistance systems are designed to prevent or mitigate collisions with vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, and large animals. Key systems include Pilot Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) with Cross-Traffic Alert, Collision Mitigation Support, 360° camera, Park Assist, and Hill Descent Control.
Comprehensive occupant protection includes dual front and driver’s knee airbags, Side Impact Protection System (SIPS), Inflatable Curtains, Whiplash Protection (WHIPS), and Isofix anchor points for child safety.
Confidence in Every Drive
“The XC90 has always been a cornerstone of Volvo’s success in South Africa,” said Grant Locke, Managing Director of VCSA. “With this latest update, it remains a luxury SUV that families can trust for space, comfort, and safety, while introducing the technology and efficiency that define our next chapter. Alongside the fully electric EX90, the new XC90 gives South Africans the choice between advanced hybrid capability and pure electric driving, ensuring our brand is ready to meet both today’s needs and tomorrow’s expectations.”
