In an inspiring collaboration, BMW UK and the UK’s National Parks have embarked on a transformative journey through their Recharge in Nature partnership, marking significant progress for both people and the planet. Launched 18 months ago, this initiative is redefining how electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure and nature restoration projects can coalesce to benefit communities, wildlife, and the environment across the United Kingdom.

The Recharge in Nature project is poised to invest around £1 million in biodiversity and community projects while revolutionizing the accessibility of all 15 of the UK’s National Parks to EV users. This ambitious plan includes the installation of 135 new charging points, with another £1 million dedicated to ensuring that visitors and residents can seamlessly transition to electric vehicles in these treasured landscapes.

So far, the partnership has seen the installation of 78 new EV charge points across seven National Parks, including the Lake District, Peak District, and Dartmoor. These charge points are strategically placed in areas where they will make the most impact—high-traffic zones or regions lacking sufficient infrastructure. According to Pod Point data, the new charging stations have already facilitated enough electric miles to save over 42 tonnes of CO2, underlining the environmental benefits of the project.

But the partnership’s impact extends far beyond just EV infrastructure. Through a series of targeted nature restoration and community projects, the Recharge in Nature initiative is also making a tangible difference in biodiversity and public well-being.

In the South Downs National Park, for example, 10 vital dew ponds have been restored, addressing the pressing issue of disappearing water bodies due to hotter, drier summers. This restoration is expected to bolster the local ecosystem, making it more likely for visitors to encounter frogs, toads, dragonflies, and hedgehogs in the area.

Meanwhile, in Eryri National Park (Snowdonia), the project has implemented natural flood management strategies around Llyn Tegid, Wales’s largest natural freshwater lake. These measures include the creation of dew ponds, leaky dams, and the planting of over 20,000 new trees, all of which aim to protect the lake from pollution and maintain its delicate ecosystem. The involvement of local farmers in these efforts highlights the community-centered approach of the Recharge in Nature initiative.

Youth engagement is another cornerstone of the project. In the North York Moors National Park, young people have contributed over 3,000 hours of volunteering, enhancing their well-being, employability, and potential as future conservationists. Similarly, in Dartmoor National Park, funding for a Youth Engagement Ranger has allowed over 1,300 young people to experience the outdoors, many for the first time.

Looking ahead, the Recharge in Nature partnership promises even more innovative projects. A temperate rainforest will soon begin to take root in Exmoor National Park, contributing to carbon capture and supporting local ecosystems. In the Peak District, the ‘Peaks of Health’ project will help more people access nature’s healing benefits by working with community-based health and well-being organizations. Additionally, new electric shuttle bus services are set to improve access and reduce congestion in Loch Lomond & The Trossachs and Pembrokeshire Coast National Parks.

The appointment of new Nature Rangers in Northumberland National Park further exemplifies the project’s commitment to fostering a deep connection between people and nature. These rangers will spearhead activities that promote conservation and climate action, ensuring that the parks remain welcoming and sustainable for future generations.

As the Recharge in Nature partnership continues to evolve, the successes so far serve as a testament to the power of collaboration between technology and nature. Graham Biggs, Corporate Communications Director at BMW UK, reflects on this journey, stating, “It’s a pleasure to celebrate the tangible impacts of this partnership. We look forward to continuing our investment in biodiversity and community projects across more of the Parks, alongside the growth of the EV charging network.”

Naomi Conway, Director of National Parks Partnerships, echoes this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of accessibility and nature restoration. “It’s incredibly inspiring how Recharge in Nature is giving more people the chance to actively connect with nature, including young people who will be our planet’s future custodians,” she says.

This partnership between BMW UK and the UK’s National Parks is not just about recharging vehicles; it’s about recharging the relationship between people and the natural world. Through thoughtful investment and innovative projects, they are paving the way for a more sustainable and connected future.
