The Royal Automobile Club‘s annual Art of Motoring exhibition, considered to be the most prestigious showcase for motoring art in Europe, moves to an exciting new home for its tenth-anniversary show.

The exhibition, an established feature of the Club’s London Motor Week, this year moves to the Iconic Images Gallery at 16 Waterloo Place, London, SW1 – a mere 30 seconds’ walk from the Pall Mall clubhouse. The new location allows the Club to present the work of the country’s leading artists and sculptors, alongside the work of emerging new talents, in spectacular new surroundings.

Ben Cussons, Chairman of the Royal Automobile Club, commented “We have long been Britain’s strongest supporter of motoring art, and this year we have further increased our commitment to the genre. Not only have we successfully introduced our new Summer Exhibition at the Club’s Woodcote Park clubhouse, we are also supporting the move to a prime location in St James’s. It is the perfect place to present the work of the country’s finest motoring artists”.

This year the exhibition will run over four days, opening on Wednesday 1 November and closing at 5pm on Saturday 5 November. Entry is completely free of charge and open to the public. Although primarily for new and original works, the artists – many of whom will be on hand to talk about their work – are also accepting new commissions, and will have limited edition prints for sale. The exhibition can be viewed – virtually – at www.theartofmotoring.co.uk.

The exhibition is created jointly by Andrew Marriott of Pit Lane Productions and Rupert Whyte of Historic Car Art. Andrew said: “For our tenth anniversary we are delighted to be showing at such an outstanding and accessible contemporary galley. It is marvellous that some of our artists have been with us since the beginning, but it’s exciting that we are also introducing new talent too.”

In addition to London-based Swede Johansson, whose highly imaginative works always attract attention, the show will also feature the canvases of many of the well-known UK artists, including Tim Layzell, John Ketchell, Neil Collins, Roy Putt, Paul Howse, Martin Tomlinson, Brian James and Simon Britnell. Showing his work for the first time will be Scotland’s Gavin McMurray.

The north-east’s Kevin McNicholas – a newcomer last year – is returning with his impressive full-length driver portraits, and another 2022 newcomer, Richard Neergaard, will hang his unique laser-cut metal artworks.

New to the Art of Motoring is the extraordinary Welsh pencil artist Emma Capener, who proved a hit at the Club’s Summer Art of Motoring with her large-scale photorealistic driver portraits. Sculpture is included too, and regulars Robin Bark and Jonny Ambrose will be joined by another newcomer to the exhibition, Gregory Percival, with his spectacular bronzes.
