Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has unveiled a landmark expression of craftsmanship with the Phantom Arabesque, a one-of-one commission by Private Office Dubai that celebrates Middle Eastern architectural heritage through an unprecedented technique: a fully laser-engraved bonnet, five years in the making. This bespoke Phantom reimagines the region’s iconic mashrabiya latticework—a hallmark of traditional Arabian design—across its exterior, interior, and Gallery artwork, creating a cohesive statement of cultural artistry and automotive innovation.

Architectural Inspiration

Mashrabiya screens, commonly found in Middle Eastern homes, palaces, and courtyards, combine privacy, airflow, and light filtration with decorative geometry. They allow occupants to observe the outside world unseen while naturally cooling interiors—a balance of form and function that has endured for centuries. Rolls-Royce’s Private Office Dubai drew from these qualities to create Phantom Arabesque, interpreting the latticework in ways that are unmistakably Rolls-Royce while rooted in regional identity.

“Mashrabiya is one of the Middle East’s best-known and most enduring design languages. For Phantom Arabesque, we were inspired not only by its beauty but also by the privacy, light and airflow it creates. Our aim was to interpret these qualities in ways that feel both culturally rooted and unmistakably Rolls-Royce,” said Michelle Lusby, Bespoke Lead Designer at Private Office Dubai.

A New Craft: Laser-Engraving

Phantom Arabesque marks the first time a Rolls-Royce bonnet has been fully laser-engraved, a process that required a five-year development programme at the Home of Rolls-Royce. Inspired by the Italian sgraffito technique—which reveals contrasting layers by selectively removing upper surfaces—the method integrates pattern and paint to achieve a sculptural, three-dimensional effect.

The process begins with a darker base layer, sealed beneath multiple coats of clear lacquer, before a lighter top layer is applied. The mashrabiya pattern is then engraved to a depth of just 145–190 microns, revealing the darker hue beneath. Each engraved section is hand-sanded to a flawless finish, ensuring a texture that responds to light and invites tactile exploration. Variations in laser speed and intensity create subtle, shifting effects as sunlight moves across the bonnet.

“Laser engraving allows us to create a surface that is both technically precise and visually alive. Developing this patented process required years of experimentation by the entire team. Phantom Arabesque is the first expression of a technique that opens entirely new creative possibilities for future clients,” explained Tobias Sicheneder, General Manager of the Exterior Surface Centre.

Exterior and Bespoke Detailing

The Phantom Arabesque is finished in a striking Diamond Black body with contrasting Silver upper surfaces, complemented by a hand-painted Short Coachline carrying the mashrabiya motif. The exterior is elevated with an illuminated Pantheon grille in Dark Chrome, a uplit Spirit of Ecstasy, and 22-inch part-polished alloy wheels, blending heritage, luxury, and contemporary presence.

Interior: An Artful Continuation

Inside, the bespoke narrative continues. The Gallery, stretching across the full width of the fascia, showcases intricate Blackwood and Black Bolivar marquetry, echoing mashrabiya geometry. Selby Grey and Black leathers are paired with embroidered Black mashrabiya motifs on headrests, complemented by Starlight Doors with Selby Grey piping and illuminated treadplates reflecting the bonnet pattern. A discreetly offset clock punctuates the composition, balancing luxury with restraint.

Every element of Phantom Arabesque has been meticulously curated to celebrate both Rolls-Royce craftsmanship and Middle Eastern artistry. Delivered to its commissioning client, the vehicle stands as a testament to the marque’s commitment to expanding the vocabulary of contemporary craft, combining traditional inspiration with pioneering techniques.

Phantom Arabesque is more than a motor car; it is a cultural canvas, a sculpted ode to heritage, and a bold leap into the possibilities of bespoke automotive artistry.
