The exciting new Peugeot 208 range reaches South Africa shores with an attractive choice of three models, incorporating three standard levels of specification and two engines.
The 208 brings a compelling sense of style to the subcompact segment, underscored by tactile quality, close attention to detail, innovative packaging and engineering, and extensive weight-saving measures.
Combined, these factors make the 208 Peugeot’s most competitive and convincing offering in the compact hatchback segment to date. It represents a true generation leap compared to its precedessor, and sets new benchmarks for the class.
1.2 VTi Access
The entry point into the Peugeot 208 range is the competitively positioned 1.2 VTi Access. It employs the new, 1,2-litre three-cylinder engine that’s rated at 60 kW to deliver lively performance, matched to superior fuel efficiency and low emissions.
Despite its so-called entry-level status, this least expensive model in the range boasts an impressive set of standard features.
In convenience and luxury terms, the 1.2 VTi Access is equipped with air-conditioning, electric front windows, a height-adjustable driver’s seat, height and reach-adjustable steering wheel, multi-function trip computer and a refrigerated glovebox.
Safety and security are equally comprehensively addressed. ABS brakes with EBD and EBA are standard, as are dual front airbags, an integrated alarm system, electrically operated child door locks, central locking with auto-locking function on pull-off, and dual Isofix child seat mounting points.
The standard-fit audio system is a high-mounted MP3-compatible CD receiver that provides Bluetooth functionality for hands-free cellphone connectivity and audio streaming.
A USB input is also provided for connecting personal media players and flash drives. For ultimate driving convenience and safety, the system can be accessed via the satellite controls on the steering wheel.
As with all models in the range, the retails price of the 208 1.2 VTi Access includes a five-year/60 000 km Premium Plan, backed up by a three-year/100 000 km warranty for ultimate peace of mind.
1.2 VTi Active
The mid-range 208 Active takes the standard specification up a notch. Externally it is distinguished by the addition of 15-inch alloy wheels, front fog lamps, and full colour coding that extends to the door handles and mirror housings. The mirrors are electrically operated and have a useful folding function.
The safety package is bolstered with the addition of dual side airbags, and electric operation is added for the rear windows, along with height adjustment for the front passenger seat.
Peugeot’s programmable cruise control with speed limiter enhances driving convenience and safety.
The Active also gains the award-winning seven-inch (18 cm) touch screen that integrates all the functions of the multimedia system including the radio, Bluetooth hands-free kit and audio streaming, as well as the USB port.
For added practicality, the folding rear seat offers a 60/40 split in this guise, as well as a through-loading feature for long objects.
1.6 VTi Allure
The premium positioning of the 208 VTi Allure is evident in its top-end execution – and its lively 88 kW 1,6-litre four-cylinder engine. Visually, the strongest distinguishing feature of this range-topper is the presence of eye-catching LED light guide and daytime running lights, incorporated in the headlights. These impart a truly unique visual presence.
The 1.6 Allure’s sportier demeanour is emphasised by the presence of 16-inch alloy wheels and lower-profile tyres, while the rear and back windows are tinted for an added air of exclusivity.
The safety package is further enhanced by increasing the airbag count to six, thanks to the fitment of curtain airbags. Automatic headlight activation and rain-sensing windscreen wipers complement the impressive list of active safety features.
A dual-zone fully automatic climate control system enhances the interior ambience, along with an electrochromatic rearview mirror and leather-trimmed steering wheel.
