When Anneke de Swardt stepped through the doors of Equal Career Services and BCS Training Academy in Centurion, she wasn’t just beginning a course—she was making history. As the very first learner to enrol in the Retail Motor Industry Organisation’s (RMI) new Automotive Service Advisor short skills programme, Anneke marked the start of a journey that promises to shape the future of service excellence in South Africa’s automotive sector.
Her commitment was evident from day one. Under the guidance of her trainer, Charlene Prinsloo, Anneke embraced the curriculum with energy and enthusiasm. “Anneke approached every aspect of the programme with determination,” says Charlene. “She actively participated in class discussions, completed her workplace assignments with care, and consistently demonstrated a strong work ethic. From the outset, I had no doubt she would successfully complete the programme and prove her competence in the final assessments.”
Designed to address the evolving needs of the automotive service environment, the Automotive Service Advisor short skills programme is one of five specialised offerings available exclusively to RMI employer members. According to RMI Training Director Louis van Huyssteen, the initiative represents a crucial investment in the industry’s talent pipeline. “This programme equips learners with the essential skills needed to excel in the automotive service environment,” he says. “It provides structured, industry-aligned training that meets both workplace and customer service demands.”
A cornerstone of the programme is the ‘Skills Programme Orientation & Business Ethics’ module, which sets the tone for professional conduct across all aspects of the workplace. Pieter Niemand, National Director of the Motor Industry Workshop Association (MIWA)—a proud RMI constituent association—emphasises its value: “Ethical conduct and professionalism are critical in our sector. This module empowers learners with the knowledge and values needed to navigate workplace challenges with integrity.”

Covering topics such as workplace conduct, ethical decision-making, and personal value development, the module lays a strong foundation. But the curriculum doesn’t stop there. Learners also engage with key modules including ‘Communication Skills,’ ‘Managing Customer Satisfaction,’ ‘Service Administration Processes,’ and ‘Automotive Vehicle Product Knowledge’.
“These modules provide a well-rounded learning experience that mirrors the real-world industry landscape,” explains Charlene. “Learners develop essential communication and customer service skills while gaining hands-on expertise in service administration and vehicle product knowledge.”
The training experience is carefully crafted to ensure learners graduate with both the confidence and the competence to succeed. At the heart of this approach are Hester Delport and Kowie Botha, directors at Equal Career Services and BCS Training Academy. “From day one, our focus has been on creating an environment where learners can develop both technical and professional skills,” they explain. “Through comprehensive training materials and practical exercises that simulate real workplace scenarios, we prepare them to become industry-ready professionals who add value to their employers.”
Anneke de Swardt’s achievement is a milestone not just for her, but for the industry as a whole. Her story stands as a testament to what’s possible when ambition meets opportunity—and it sets the stage for many more success stories to come.
As the RMI continues to champion skills development through its suite of short skills programmes, a new generation of service advisors will rise—equipped, empowered, and ready to drive excellence in every customer interaction. The road ahead looks bright, and it all began with one determined learner who dared to take the first step.
