Midrand, 01 August 2024 – Opel South Africa recently hosted its inaugural Grandlands Slam, a one-day Padel challenge that captivated enthusiasts across Cape Town, Durban, and Johannesburg. This dynamic event saw champions crowned after an intense four-hour competition, showcasing Opel’s commitment to innovation, active lifestyles, and social engagement.
Padel: The Sport Taking South Africa by Storm
Originally from Mexico, Padel has rapidly gained popularity in South Africa since its introduction three years ago. Today, hundreds of courts dot the major cities, and Opel has been at the forefront of this trend, sponsoring courts in Randpark (Johannesburg), Gateway (Durban), and Durbanville (Cape Town) since the beginning of the year. The sport’s combination of accessibility, excitement, and social interaction makes it a perfect match for Opel’s customer base.
A Natural Fit: Opel Grandland and Padel
Opel South Africa saw the Grandlands Slam as an ideal opportunity to align its innovative Opel Grandland range with the energetic sport of Padel. According to Opel SA Brand Head, Jateen Daya, “Padel is a fantastic sport that has captured people’s imagination because of the innovation behind it, the ease with which people can access and enjoy it and the downright enjoyment of getting out, spending time with friends, competing and getting fit. We like to think the Opel Grandland is equally innovative, enabling an active lifestyle, whether for fitness or social sake.”
The Evolution of Opel: From Sewing Machines to Cutting-Edge Vehicles
The evolution of Padel mirrors Opel’s journey in the automotive world. Founded in 1862 to manufacture sewing machines, Opel expanded into making Penny Farthing bicycles and eventually cars. Today, the brand is renowned for its pioneering work in the electric vehicle (EV) field. This spirit of innovation is embodied in the Opel Grandland, with its bold new design, iconic Vizor, vibrant interior featuring the Pure Panel display, state-of-the-art responsive engine, and IntelliLuxLED® Pixel Lights.
The Grandlands Slam Event: A Showcase of Agility and Performance
The Grandlands Slam event on 20 July saw nearly 100 players compete in doubles teams across Cape Town, Durban, and Johannesburg. Each city hosted 40 players, divided into four groups, playing in the Fast 6 format. Each match consisted of six games, with the top two teams in each group advancing to the quarter-finals, followed by the semi-finals and finals.
The event was more than just a competition; it was a celebration of the Opel lifestyle. Participants and spectators alike experienced the elegance and sportiness of the Opel Grandland, available in three models: the Edition Base, GS Line, and the top-of-the-range Ultimate. Each model features a high level of specification typically found in higher segments, powered by Opel’s 121kW 1.6T engine with automatic transmission. This stylish SUV proved to be the ultimate Padel enabler, embodying agility and performance.

Building a Community: The Impact of the Grandlands Slam
The Grandlands Slam was not only a thrilling sporting event but also an opportunity to introduce a new cohort of fans to Opel’s diverse range, including the Corsa, Mokka, Zafira Life, and the star of the show, the Grandland. Jateen Daya expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “This was a massive success for everyone involved, from the players to the Opel staff on the day. South Africa can look forward to more Padel events like this.”
The Opel Grandlands Slam successfully merged the worlds of innovative automotive design and the fast-growing sport of Padel. By fostering active, social, and stylish lifestyles, Opel continues to drive forward, both on the Padel court and the open road. This event marks the beginning of a new chapter in Opel’s engagement with its customers, celebrating agility, performance, and community.
