Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. has been a trailblazer in the automotive industry, not only for its innovative vehicles but also for its unwavering commitment to sustainability. The recently published Integrated Report 2024 highlights Nissan’s strides towards achieving its Ambition 2030 vision. Central to this vision are the Nissan Green Program 2030 (NGP2030) and the Nissan Social Program 2030 (NSP2030), two strategic initiatives that underscore the company’s dedication to environmental and social progress.

Nissan Green Program 2030

The Nissan Green Program 2030 (NGP2030) marks the fifth generation of Nissan’s environmental action plans. Originally launched in 2002, the NGP has consistently aimed to harmonize the relationship between people, vehicles, and nature. NGP2030 focuses on three critical areas: climate change, resource dependency, and air quality and water.

Key Sustainability Targets

Nissan’s ambitious targets under NGP2030 include:

  • Reducing Per-Vehicle Lifecycle CO2 Emissions: Aiming for a 30% reduction.
  • Reducing Per-Vehicle Manufacturing CO2 Emissions: Targeting a 52% reduction.
  • Reducing Per-Vehicle Driving CO2 Emissions for New Models: Striving for a 50% reduction in Japan, the U.S., Europe, and China, and a 32.5% reduction globally.
  • Increasing Sustainable Material Ratio: Targeting 40% in Japan, the U.S., Europe, and China.

By addressing these priorities, Nissan is committed to achieving carbon neutrality, transitioning to a circular economy, and minimizing its environmental footprint.

Nissans Path To Carbon Neutrality And Social Responsibility By 2030

Nissan Social Program 2030

The Nissan Social Program 2030 (NSP2030) builds on the company’s existing social initiatives, forming a cornerstone of Nissan’s broader strategy, The Arc. This people-centric approach emphasizes Nissan’s role in fostering a safe, inclusive, and progressive society.

The Six Pillars of NSP2030
  1. Safety: Ensuring the well-being of all stakeholders.
  2. Quality: Upholding high standards in all operations.
  3. Responsible Sourcing: Ethical procurement practices.
  4. Intellectual Property: Protecting and leveraging innovations.
  5. Communities: Engaging and supporting local communities.
  6. Power of Employees: Promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), employee rights, and professional growth.

These pillars reflect Nissan’s holistic approach to sustainability, aiming to create a positive societal impact while advancing the company’s long-term goals.

Fostering a Sustainable Corporate Culture

At the heart of Nissan’s social initiatives is the ‘power of employees’ pillar, which encompasses DEI, employee human rights, learning and development, and health and safety. Nissan fosters a corporate culture where employees are empowered and supported to be their authentic selves, driving innovation and achieving their full potential.

Employee Resource Groups (ERGs)

Nissan’s commitment to DEI is evident through its robust ERG network, which includes groups focused on LGBTQ+ inclusion, support for working parents, and promoting multiculturalism. These ERGs spearhead activities that cultivate an open, innovative workplace environment.

The Arc and Beyond

The NGP2030 and NSP2030 are integral to Nissan’s business plan, The Arc, serving as a bridge to the company’s long-term vision, Ambition 2030. Joji Tagawa, Nissan’s chief sustainability officer, emphasizes the importance of collaboration with partners and stakeholders to ensure inclusive progress toward sustainability. This collaborative effort aligns with Nissan’s corporate purpose: “Driving innovation to enrich people’s lives.”

Nissan’s Integrated Report 2024 provides a comprehensive overview of the company’s dedication to sustainability through its NGP2030 and NSP2030 initiatives. By focusing on environmental stewardship and social responsibility, Nissan is not only paving the way for a sustainable future but also setting a benchmark for the automotive industry. As the company continues to innovate and evolve, its commitment to a cleaner, safer, and more inclusive world remains unwavering.
