The Nissan X-Trail has long been one of the most recognisable family SUVs on the road, combining everyday practicality with genuine all-terrain capability. Now, as the model celebrates 25 years of adventure, the 2026 update introduces a stronger design, improved connectivity and enhanced technology aimed at making family journeys smoother, smarter and more confident than ever.
The latest model builds on the reputation that has helped establish the X-Trail as a cornerstone of Nissan’s electrified SUV line-up. With a refreshed exterior, upgraded interior materials and new driver assistance technologies, the 2026 version refines the formula that has made the vehicle a trusted companion for families across varied landscapes and driving conditions.
At first glance, the changes are clear. The updated X-Trail adopts a more assertive stance, led by a redesigned front fascia that showcases a wider and cleaner interpretation of Nissan’s signature V-Motion grille. The new look gives the SUV a more contemporary appearance while maintaining the rugged character that has defined it for decades.
Further enhancing its presence are new design details that sharpen the overall aesthetic. Diamond-cut alloy wheels, measuring up to 20 inches on Tekna grade models, complement glossy black accents across the lower bumpers, wheelarch surrounds, mirrors and side sills. At the rear, newly designed full-LED tail lamps deliver a crisper lighting signature, while fresh paint options such as Sukomo Blue and Coastal Dune, both available with two-tone finishes, expand the visual appeal.
Inside the cabin, Nissan has focused on improving comfort and perceived quality while maintaining the durable nature expected of a family adventure vehicle. New materials and finishes bring a warmer, more refined atmosphere to the interior. Highlights include chestnut brown quilted leather upholstery, a wood-effect centre console trim and the option of high-quality synthetic leather.
Practicality remains central to the X-Trail’s design philosophy. Heated seats in both the front and rear rows, a heated steering wheel and three-zone climate control enhance passenger comfort, while the 12.3-inch infotainment display serves as the technological centrepiece of the dashboard. A sliding 40/20/40 split second row ensures flexible seating arrangements, allowing owners to prioritise passengers, cargo or outdoor equipment depending on the journey ahead.
Technology takes a significant step forward with the introduction of NissanConnect featuring Google built-in. The system enables drivers to interact with the vehicle using natural voice commands through Google Assistant, allowing them to adjust cabin settings, navigate to destinations or make calls without diverting attention from the road. Access to the Google Play Store brings additional applications into the vehicle, while over-the-air updates ensure the system remains up to date over time.
Parking and low-speed manoeuvring are made easier through the upgraded 3D Around View Monitor. Using wide-angle cameras positioned around the vehicle, the system generates a high-definition bird’s-eye view on the central display. Drivers can select from multiple perspectives around the car, making it easier to identify obstacles that might otherwise remain hidden.
Two specialised viewing modes further enhance situational awareness. Invisible Hood View uses camera imaging and predictive processing to simulate a transparent bonnet, allowing drivers to see the placement of the front wheels when navigating tight kerbs, rocky tracks or uneven terrain. Meanwhile, the new T-Junction view provides a broader forward perspective at low speeds, helping drivers emerge more confidently from concealed exits or intersections with limited visibility.
Driver assistance also sees meaningful improvements through updates to Nissan’s ProPILOT Assist system. The technology now delivers smoother braking and acceleration responses, more stable lane keeping and improved awareness of surrounding traffic conditions. Enhancements include more accurate traffic sign detection, anticipated speed sign recognition and undertake prevention, all designed to support a more natural and relaxed driving experience.
Under the bonnet, the 2026 X-Trail continues to use Nissan’s distinctive e-POWER hybrid system. Unlike conventional hybrids, the setup uses a petrol engine solely to generate electricity, while the wheels are driven entirely by an electric motor. The result is immediate torque delivery, smooth acceleration and a driving experience that closely resembles that of a fully electric vehicle, without requiring external charging.
For drivers seeking greater traction in challenging conditions, the system can be paired with Nissan’s e-4ORCE all-wheel-drive technology. This configuration enhances stability and grip across slippery roads, gravel tracks and uneven terrain, reinforcing the X-Trail’s reputation for dependable all-terrain confidence.
The 2026 update also marks the return of the rugged N-Trek grade, designed for customers who regularly venture beyond urban environments. This variant introduces distinctive styling elements including magma red accents on the bumpers, contrast interior stitching and unique Nissan logos across the wheels, grille and tailgate. An exclusive N-Trek badge and a subtle Mount Fuji graphic hidden within the boot area add character to the adventurous theme.
Beyond visual updates, the N-Trek grade emphasises durability and practicality. Waterproof CellCloth upholstery helps repel moisture from wet clothing or muddy gear, while rubber floor mats and a reversible cargo liner protect the interior during outdoor excursions. Full LED headlights, 19-inch alloy wheels, black roof rails and an electric panoramic sunroof further reinforce its blend of toughness and comfort.
Performance remains strong across the line-up. The two-wheel-drive version produces 204 horsepower and accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in eight seconds, while the all-wheel-drive variant increases output to 213 horsepower and completes the same sprint in seven seconds. Both versions deliver a maximum torque figure of 330 Nm, with the all-wheel-drive model adding an additional 195 Nm through the rear motor system.
Efficiency remains a key part of the package, with combined WLTP fuel economy rated at up to 49.6 mpg and towing capacity reaching up to 1,800 kg, reinforcing the X-Trail’s suitability for caravans, trailers and outdoor equipment.
Available in Acenta Premium, N-Connecta, N-Trek and Tekna grades, the updated 2026 Nissan X-Trail is now open for orders in the UK with prices starting from £38,220. With its combination of rugged design, advanced hybrid technology and modern connectivity, the latest version continues to build on a 25-year legacy of dependable family adventure.
