In a stunning display of engineering prowess and unyielding passion, Nissan’s Barcelona-based engineering team transformed the X-Trail into a rally contender, achieving a remarkable feat at the Baja Aragon Rally. This achievement underscores the innovative spirit and dedication that drive Nissan’s technical teams.
The Passion Project
The journey began in February 2023, when a group of seven engineers from Nissan’s Technical Centre Europe – Spain (NTCE-S) decided to test the limits of the X-Trail e-4ORCE, powered by Nissan’s unique e-POWER system. This “passion project” aimed to explore the rallying potential of the vehicle without significant modifications to its powertrain.
Grueling Challenge and Victory
The Baja Aragon Rally, held on July 27-28, 2024, presented a formidable challenge, with over 310 miles of harsh, unforgiving terrain. The X-Trail, driven by seasoned test drivers Jonatan Gijón and Cesar Fernández, not only participated but successfully completed the rally. This achievement highlighted the robustness and reliability of the e-POWER system and the e-4ORCE twin motor all-wheel drive system.
Minimal Modifications, Maximum Performance
Remarkably, the X-Trail’s powertrain remained unmodified from the standard production version. The modifications made for the rally included enhanced cooling capacity, uprated suspension, a roll cage, a competition fuel tank, a stripped-out interior, and mandated safety equipment. These changes ensured the vehicle’s compliance with rally standards while preserving its core engineering integrity.

Engineering Excellence
Miquel Sasot, Manager of the Powertrain Group at NTCE-S, expressed immense pride in the team’s accomplishment. “The fact that we finished is a great recognition of e-POWER and the e-4ORCE twin motor all-wheel system. And it’s also a credit to the passion and commitment of this small group of engineers who worked so hard to bring this crazy idea to reality,” he stated.
Innovative Spirit
David Moss, Senior Vice President of Region Research & Development at Nissan’s AMIEO region, highlighted the innovative spirit within Nissan’s research and development functions. The team’s initiative to modify the X-Trail for rally competition was a testament to their entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to pushing the boundaries of automotive engineering.
A Unique Powertrain
The e-POWER system, central to the X-Trail’s success, is distinct from traditional hybrid systems. It uses an electric motor to drive the wheels, offering a smooth, responsive driving experience. An advanced petrol engine generates electricity, eliminating the need for external charging. This unique configuration has resonated with consumers, leading to the sale of over 150,000 e-POWER-equipped vehicles in Europe.
Future Prospects
The success at the Baja Aragon Rally has paved the way for future endeavors. The X-Trail was entered in the “Open” category this year, with an eye on participating in the “Stock” category next year, which includes vehicles based on standard production specifications, including hybrids.
Nissan’s triumph at the Baja Aragon Rally with the modified X-Trail e-4ORCE is a testament to the company’s dedication to innovation, excellence, and pushing the boundaries of what is possible. This victory not only showcases the potential of the e-POWER system but also highlights the extraordinary achievements that result from passion-driven engineering.
