This September, East London will host a groundbreaking event aimed at promoting diversity and inclusion in sports. “Run to the Future,” a mass participation running event, is set to take place at the iconic Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on Sunday, September 15th. Supported by Nissan and championed by former British athlete Richard Whitehead MBE and broadcaster/DJ Adele Roberts, this event promises to be a significant moment for both the running community and those championing inclusive sports.
An Event for All
“Run to the Future” features two race options: a 2k and a 5k, designed to accommodate all levels of ability. Starting and finishing near the London Stadium, the course allows participants to walk, run, roll, or push their way around the venue that once hosted the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. This inclusive approach ensures that everyone, regardless of their physical capabilities, can join in the celebration.

A Focus on Inclusivity
Richard Whitehead and Adele Roberts are committed to making this event accessible to everyone, including those from underrepresented communities. Trained Support Runners, provided by the Richard Whitehead Foundation, will be on hand to assist individuals with disabilities, helping them navigate the course and overcome any potential challenges. This initiative is designed to break down barriers and make the event as inclusive as possible.
Whitehead, a former distance runner and Nissan GB’s diversity, equity, and inclusion ambassador, expressed his passion for the cause: “Disabled people sometimes don’t feel confident enough to enter sporting events. As a former athlete, I feel it’s something we should change. Whatever the race, whatever the distance, it’s always a chance to give back to the running community and inspire the disability community.”
Similarly, Adele Roberts, who also serves as a Nissan GB diversity, equity, and inclusion ambassador, emphasized the event’s commitment to creating an inclusive space for all participants. She said, “Everyone should be comfortable to participate in or attend any sporting event. We’re aiming to create an inclusive space for the LGBTQ+ community and our allies, family, and friends.”
