(Rosslyn, South Africa, 15 SEPTEMBER 2014) – Nissan South Africa sponsored the inaugural 2014 Jong Ram Van Die Jaar (Young Ram of the Year) auction  held at the Afridome in Parys on 10 September. Supporting ongoing involvement with the agricultural community in South Africa, a range of sturdy Nissan Light Commercial Vehicles (LCVs) were on display at the event, bolstering the strong Nissan presence which reinforces the deep roots the brand has with the South African agriculture industry.

Centred on the most prized mutton in the country and underwritten by the South African Mutton Merino Breeders Society, the auction handed over thoroughbred Mutton Merino rams to some of the country’s foremost sheep farmers, bred to the highest genetic standards to ensure utmost significance in both their meat and wool product values. The auctioned rams were all younger than 18 months.  The brand-new auction was devised out of the need for an auction with a difference, spurred on by enthusiastic sheep farmers who wanted only the absolute finest mutton in the country – genetically scrutinised and certified via a laboratorial process before the auction to ensure absolute perfection. The winning ram reached a price of R10 500 and was sold to bidder Danie Thomas from Edenville. A total of 43 rams were auctioned with an average price of R7 401 per ram. The auction will now become an annual event planned for the 2nd Wednesday in September.

Young-Ram-of-the-year

“It was a strategic decision to sponsor this inaugural auction; which underscores Nissan’s business objectives in the agriculture sector,” comments Product Marketing Manager at Nissan South Africa, Marinus Venter. “Our comprehensive range of bakkies, including the Nissan NP200, NP300 Hardbody, Navara and the recently-launched Nissan Patrol Pick-up, are ideally suited to the art of sheep farming in South Africa.”

The wide range of Nissan bakkies offers the durability, reliability and practically required to lovingly rear South Africa’s finest mutton – important factors backed by generous load boxes and easy sheep rail fitment options.

The sponsorship deal forms part of Nissan South Africa’s ongoing commitment to the South African agricultural industries, supplementing Nissan’s strategic 14-year partnership with the Agri Securitas Trust Fund which ensures the prevention and reduction of crime that affects rural farmers. Portions of the proceeds from the sale of Nissan LCVs to customers from organised agriculture, contribute to this financial assistance programme and make a direct impact on the communities which thrive on agriculture, sustaining growth in the process.
