Nissan improves the healthcare experience for Rosslyn’s local community

ROSSLYN, PRETORIA (27 November 2012) – Nissan has donated four gazebos to the Rosslyn Clinic, providing shade to the centre it presented to the City of Tshwane Municipality in 2010.

Nissan South Africa

The gazebos were supplied following a request from the primary healthcare clinic’s staff for portable shelters to protect people in queues from the elements. Each gazebo offers cover for up to eight people.

Keba Matlhako, corporate social responsibility officer, Nissan South Africa, presented the gazebos to Ms Yolanda Mabusela, a Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) of Tshwane, in the presence of community members and personnel of the Rosslyn Clinic.

“We’re very happy to help make the mobile clinic experience more comfortable for those who depend on it,” said Matlhako, “and I can assure you the gazebos will give effective protection from the extreme summer heat and the seasonal rainstorms in this region.”

The MMC thanked Nissan on behalf of the city for the gazebos and for the company’s support for community health initiatives.

“The city’s health department services some 2.5 million people and almost 75% of them are not covered by medical aid,” said Mabusela, “so we appreciate Nissan’s continued involvement in improving health facilities for our people, most of whom have no means to pay for healthcare.”

The Rosslyn Clinic is an essential medical resource for the population of Rosslyn, Orchards, Garankuwa, Soshanguve and surrounding areas. Its services are wide-ranging and include immunisation for children, antenatal and postnatal advice, emergency care and HIV counselling.

The mobile clinic, a fully converted Nissan Cabstar equipped with medical essentials, has extended these services to communities in informal settlements in thePretorianorth and west areas who previously were without easy access to medical care.

“The mobile clinic has especially proved invaluable for treating children, 1400 of whom were not reached by other clinics due to lack of capacity and resources,” said the MMC.

Based at Rosslyn Clinic in Region 1, the mobile operates five days a week at alternate sites on the following days:

  • Mondays and Tuesdays – Extension 10 Soshanguve
  • Wednesday and Thursdays – Block X – Dunusa at Soshanguve
  • Fridays – Klerksoord for the Jwarha community
  • The provision of portable gazebos is part of Nissan SA’s corporate social responsibility programme which is involved in a number of education, health and humanitarian initiatives in the area of its Rosslyn-based manufacturing operation and beyond.
