Great driving fun with small displacement and low fuel consumption

Wolfsburg, 08 March 2012 – Just in time for spring, Volkswagen expands the range of engines for the Beetle: As of now, a 77 kW / 105 PS diesel engine (TDI) and a 118 kW / 160 PS (TSI) petrol engine are new in the programme.

Volkswagen Beetle

Europe’s most successful automotive brand banks on fuel-efficient and agile downsized engines with small displacement, direct injection and charging. Thanks to this technical equipment, the 1.6 TDI Beetle needs only 4.5 l/100 km (equivalent to 119 g/km CO2) and achieves a maximum speed of 180 km/h.

Fully fuelled (55 litres), the Volkswagen thus has a theoretical driving range of 1,222 km. In practice, it means that the Beetle 1.6 TDI on its way from Lisbon to Frankfurt on the Main—straight through Portugal, Spain, France and Germany—would have to be filled up just once. The old Beetle slogan: “It runs and runs and runs …” thus takes on a completely new meaning.

With the 1.2 TSI (77 kW / 105 PS), the entry to the world of Beetle engines is marked by a charged petrol direct-injection engine. Its key performance data: 5.9 l/100 km or 137 g/km CO2,180 km/h top speed. The top engine is currently a 2.0-litre TSI with 147 kW / 200 PS that has a combined fuel consumption of 7.7 l/100 km (equivalent to 179 g/km CO2) and accelerates the Beetle to 223 km/h.

Despite its sophisticated powertrain technology, the Beetle is an affordable car. The Beetle 1.2 TSI with 105 PS starts at 16,950 euros. The well-known suitability for day-to-day use as a full-fledged 4-seater, the high quality and safety standards with a solid basic equipment are on board as inherent features of the new Beetle.
