2014 Suzuki SX4

The original Suzuki SX4 was one of the pioneers of the C-segment crossover market. Now, the latest iteration of this distinctive trend-setter establishes new standards that propel the attractive, sporty and inherently versatile SUV to even greater heights.

Combining bold, contemporary styling with high levels of comfort, practicality, efficiency and dynamics, the new-generation SX4 represents the optimal choice for families with active lifestyles.

“The SX4 is a crossover that brings together Suzuki’s compact car know-how with technologies honed for sport utility vehicles,” says Francois van Eeden, national marketing manager of Suzuki Auto South Africa.

“The spacious new SX4 offers exceptional versatility and superior handling, along with a technologically advanced, highly efficient engine and new AllGrip four-wheel drive system to create a dynamically outstanding vehicle.”

EMOTIVE DESIGN

The design of the new SX4 embodies emotion, quality and an underlying focus on aerodynamics. The bold grille and contemporary headlight treatment reflect sharp and edgy styling, which is carried through to the strong shoulder lines.

Quality is evident through the inclusion of bright and efficient LED daytime running lights integrated into the headlights of the range-topping model. Two-part combination tail light clusters, and an attractive mix of colours and contrasting finishes enhance the SX4’s sporty demeanour.

Visual highlights include wheel arch mouldings in contrasting black and metallic finishes for protective panels at the front, side and rear of the SX4.

EXTENDED DIMENSIONS

The new SX4 has a useful 180 mm of ground clearance (175 mm on the GLX), while its overall dimensions have been increased significantly compared to the previous model. The newcomer is 165 mm longer, with a 100 mm increase in wheelbase, while the width has grown by 10 mm.

Despite its larger overall dimensions, the new SX4 cuts a sleek figure. The crossover’s roofline, which slopes gently towards the rear, contributes to an impressively low drag coefficient, resulting in superior aerodynamics, and contributing to the crossover’s athletic image.

SUZUKI SX4 SPACIOUS, COMFORTABLE CABIN

Suzuki SX4 Interior

The dynamic appearance of the new Suzuki SX4 is carried through to the sophisticated interior. The expansive dashboard incorporates soft-padded surfaces that impart a feeling of roominess and tactile quality, with metallic highlights that contrast with the cabin’s smart, charcoal keynote hue.

Occupant comfort, already a key selling point of the existing SX4, has been further improved in the new model. The cabin is now 220 mm longer and 35 mm wider than the original version.

Compared to the outgoing model, the new SX4 provides significantly more legroom for occupants, particularly at the rear, while the shape of the front seatbacks has been altered to benefit knee clearance.

Driver comfort is bolstered by a tilt and reach-adjustable steering wheel, while both front seats can be adjusted for height. A 60/40 split-folding rear bench seat ensures practicality.

The two-position reclining backrest for the rear seat on the GLX derivatives can be employed to boost passenger comfort, or to add a further 10 litres of cargo space to the class-leading 430 litre luggage compartment. When the backrest is folded flat, a massive 1,269 litres of luggage space is available.

SUZUKI SX4 EFFICIENT DRIVETRAIN

In line with the increased demand for crossover vehicles that link their versatility to low fuel consumption and emissions, the new Suzuki SX4 features a refined and economical 1,6-litre four-cylinder engine, equipped with variable valve timing (VVT) and electronic fuel injection.

This lightweight mill produces 86 kW of power at 6 000 r/min, along with 156 Nm of torque at 4 400 r/min. It is available with the choice of a five-speed manual gearbox or an efficient continuously variable transmission (CVT).

The SX4 can be specified in front-wheel drive guise, or equipped with Suzuki’s latest AllGrip four-wheel drive system on range-topping models. The system features four driving modes: Auto, Sport, Snow and Lock.

In two-wheel drive manual and CVT specification, the SX4 limits CO2 emissions to just 137 g/km, while it is credited with a fuel consumption figure of 5,8 l/100 km, based on the EU combined cycle.

SUZUKI SX4 FIVE-MODEL LINE-UP

The new Suzuki SX4 line-up comprises five models, all powered by the same, highly efficient 1,6-litre engine. There are three front-wheel drive versions, while the two flagships are fitted with the innovative AllGrip four-wheel drive system.

The entry-level two-wheel drive version features the GL interior execution, and a five-speed manual gearbox. The remaining two-wheel drive derivatives are equipped to the even more comprehensive GLX specification, but offer either a manual gearbox, or constantly variable transmission (CVT).

That leaves the two flagship GLX AllGrip versions, both with the same long list of standard features, but also featuring either a manual gearbox, or a CVT.

A high level of safety and convenience equipment is fitted as standard across the range, including the likes of ABS brakes with EBD, Electronic Stability Program (ESP), a full complement of seven airbags, cruise control, as well as a Bluetooth and MP3-capable infotainment system.

All five models are supported a three-year/100 000 km warranty, a three-year/90 000 km service plan, and a three-year roadside assistance package. Services are 15 000 km intervals.
