Few cars carry as much weight in Europe’s automotive story as the Renault Clio. Since its debut in 1990, the model has consistently redefined what a compact hatchback can be, winning two European Car of the Year titles, spawning cult classics like the Clio Williams and Clio V6, and selling nearly 17 million units across 120 countries. In 2025, it remains Europe’s best-selling car—a remarkable feat for a model that has just turned 35.
Now, Renault ushers in the sixth generation, a Clio that takes everything its predecessors stood for and dials it up. With a sculpted silhouette inspired by strong Latin roots, cutting-edge hybrid powertrains, and premium C-segment technology packaged into a nimble B-segment hatchback, the new Clio is not just an evolution—it’s a revolution.
Design with a Latin Edge
Renault’s design team has delivered what it calls a “peppy” new identity for Clio. The car looks bolder, sharper, and more athletic, with proportions that push it towards coupé territory. A longer bonnet, chiselled lines, and a dynamic roofline give it presence beyond its size. At the front, a diamond-inspired light signature and bold grille create an expressive, unmistakably Renault face.
The profile balances sculpted concave and convex surfaces, emphasised by wider tracks and available 18-inch alloys that amplify its sporty stance. At the rear, concealed handles and a sharp boot line give it an athletic edge, while taillights inspired by sports cars complete the look. Customers can choose from seven colours, including striking new Absolute Red and Absolute Green finishes.
Inside, modernity and sustainability converge. The cabin introduces recycled and low-impact materials across trims, while top-spec Esprit Alpine versions feature Alcantara and innovative coloured chrome finishes. A new dual-screen OpenR Link multimedia system with Google built-in dominates the dashboard, wrapped in ambient lighting with 48 customisable hues.
Hybrid Power, Pure Performance
The star of the new Clio range is the E-Tech full hybrid 160hp powertrain. Developed with technology borrowed from Formula 1, it blends a 1.8-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with two electric motors and a multimode gearbox. The result is brisk performance—0–62mph in 8.5 seconds—matched with remarkable efficiency.
Emissions are as low as 89g/km CO2, and fuel economy tops out at 72.4mpg. Around town, Clio can drive in all-electric mode up to 80% of the time, saving up to 40% fuel compared to a conventional petrol engine. On the motorway, it offers a range of up to 621 miles.
For drivers who prefer a simpler approach, Renault also offers a lively 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine, delivering 115hp and 190Nm of torque through a manual gearbox. With a 0–62mph time of 10.1 seconds and emissions from 114g/km, it provides a balance of affordability and agility.

Technology on a Higher Plane
Renault positions the new Clio as a B-segment car with C-segment technology, and the equipment list confirms it. Central to the experience is the OpenR Link system with Google built-in, offering Google Maps, Assistant, and Play, alongside exclusive Renault apps for entertainment and streaming. Over-the-air updates keep the system fresh, while connected services via the My Renault app extend usability beyond the car itself.
Clio is also brimming with safety and assistance features. Up to 29 advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) are available, including adaptive cruise control with emergency trajectory correction, safe-exit alerts, emergency stop assist, and a 360° camera system. Renault’s Human First safety programme also introduces driver monitoring, Safety Score, and Safety Coach—digital tools that help improve driving habits in real time.
A Legacy Reinforced
From its roots as a revolutionary step up from the Renault Super-5, Clio has become synonymous with Renault itself. It has been both practical and aspirational, playful and serious, always at the heart of the brand’s success. With over 1.3 million units sold in the UK alone since 1990, it is a cultural marker as much as a car.
As Fabrice Cambolive, CEO of the Renault brand, puts it:
“When you think Clio, you think Renault, and when you think Renault you think Clio… With each new generation, Clio redefines the standards for its category. This sixth generation perfectly represents the excellence of our hybrid range, alongside our fully electric models.”
The new Renault Clio is more than just the latest chapter in a 35-year story. It is a sharpened, superpowered evolution that proves small cars can still carry big ambitions—setting benchmarks in design, performance, technology, and sustainability for years to come.
