The interior of the new Peugeot 508 has been designed to meet the expectations of the most discerning motorist. While premium materials and comprehensive standard equipment are the central themes, it also exudes a sense of spacious elegance and uncompromising comfort.
In addition, the palpably upmarket materials, the smooth precision of the controls and the close attention to ergonomic detail underscore the tactile quality of the cabin.
The close tolerances of the fascia’s individual components ensure a sweeping, uniform whole that repeats the stylistic themes of the exterior. A multiplexed centre console has allowed the designers to overcome the constraints of conventional ISO-sized equipment, ensuring a more intuitive, ergonomically efficient layout.
UPMARKET MATERIALS AND FINISHES
The 508’s premium positioning is unequivocally expressed by the upmarket materials and finishes, including high-gloss black lacquer inserts and touches of brightwork. Linked to meticulous attention to quality, the result is a cabin that envelops its occupants in an ambience of well-being.
That sense of well-being is further enhanced by close attention to acoustic insulation and vibration damping. By encapsulating the power train, potential noise is addressed at source, affording an exceptionally quiet passenger compartment.
In addition, a standard acoustic front windscreen reduces exterior noise, while the flagship 2.2 HDi GT model is equipped with an active front axle damper to reduce engine vibration even further.
EFFICIENT PACKAGING, CONVENIENT PRACTICALITY
While the interior is unquestionably elegant and upmarket, the efficient packaging of the 508 has also ensured that the requirements for expansive space and convenient practicality are comprehensively addressed.
The interior layout provides a generous, dedicated space for each occupant. The interior dimensions closely resemble those of the far larger 607, and thus reflect a significant improvement over the 407.
For instance rear knee room has been increased by 53 mm. This means that two occupants taller than 1,83 m can still be comfortably seated behind each other.
The spaciousness of the 508 extends to the luggage compartment, which has a capacity of 512 dm3 according to the VDA standard – again considerably more than the 407. By folding down the 66/33-split rear seat backs, the cargo space can be increased to 1 356 dm3.
Practical features in the boot include a flat loading floor, solid tie-down lugs, a luggage net, and provision for a warning triangle.
The interior of the 508 is equipped with numerous storage spaces. These include generous front door pockets with a volume of four litres each, large enough to accommodate a 1,5-litre bottle, rear door panel pockets with space for a 0,5-litre bottle, a nine-litre glove compartment, and a two-litre storage space under the central armrest.
Various other stowage spaces are offered, depending on model.
COMPREHENSIVELY EQUIPPED
The upmarket status of the 508 is underscored by a comprehensive line-up of advanced systems and features.
Standard equipment offered across the range include auto-activating headlights and windscreen wipers, rear parking sensors, electric folding exterior mirrors, advanced stability control, cruise control with speed limiter, and USB and Bluetooth connectivity.
In addition, Allure models are also fitted with quad-zone climate control, half-leather upholstery, an electrically operated handbrake, and keyless access and starting.
However, it is the flagship GT model that showcases some of Peugeot’s latest and most advanced systems. These include front and rear park sensors with park assistance and available space measurement, bi-Xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights, a Head Up Display, satellite navigation, and electrically adjustable seats with position memory, seat heating and a massage function.
