Today would have been Nelson Mandela’s 96th Birthday. Nelson Mandela passed away last year in 2013 at the age of 95 in Johannesburg South Africa. He was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, politician and philanthropist who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. Nelson Mandela is recognized as a African Leader with the highest of integrity and remembered for his wisdom guiding South Africa into a peaceful democratic transition.
The Nelson Mandela Legacy
To sum up Nelson Mandela’s life and legacy in one article would be very difficult and would not do South African history and his legacy justice. One of the specific legacies Nelson Mandela left behind that stand out for me today is the 46664 movement .
Nelson Mandela International Day or Mandela Day is an annual international day in honor of Nelson Mandela, celebrated on the 18th of July every year on Mandela’s birthday. The Nelson Mandela day was officially declared by the United Nations in November 2009, with the first UN Mandela Day held on 18 July 2010.
The Nelson Mandela Day is a global movement and call to action that celebrates the idea that each individual has the power to transform the world, and have the ability to make an impact and change the world for better.
The Nelson Mandela Day campaign message is:
- “Nelson Mandela has fought for social justice for 67 years. We’re asking you to start with 67 minutes.
- We would be honored if such a day can serve to bring together people around the world to fight poverty and promote peace and reconciliation,” according to a statement issued on Nelson Mandela’s behalf

Nelson Mandela International Day was launched in recognition of Nelson Mandela’s birthday on 18 July, 2009 via unanimous decision of the UN General Assembly.
It was inspired by a call Nelson Mandela made a year earlier, for the next generation to take on the burden of leadership in addressing the world’s social injustices when he said that “it is in your hands now”.
It is more than a celebration of Madiba’s life and legacy. It is a global movement to honor his life’s work and act to change the world for the better.
