The 2012 national motorcycle show, backed by the Association of Motorcycle Distributors and Importers (AMiD) and staged at the Johannesburg Expo Centre from August 24-26, proved a resounding success.

“Our members are delighted with the results of this show, which was co-located with the

Johannesburg Boat Show

and Outdoor Lifestyle Show for the first time,” said the AMiD executive director, Réhann Coetzee.

“The combination of the three shows worked well and this lifestyle concept proved a success with an excellent turnout from the public over the three days with some 30 000 people through the gates.

“The fact that we were able to fill Hall 5’s 7 000m2 of floor space showed the commitment the show received from AMiD members and some of the non-members we invited to participate in the show to ensure visitors were exposed to the full spectrum of the local industry.

“We believe that staging our show at South Africa’s premier exhibition venue lifted the image of the motorcycle industry in the eyes of the public, while the effort the exhibitors put into their displays contributed to making this the biggest and best motorcycle show ever staged in our country,” continued Coetzee.

Several of the manufacturers took the opportunity to launch new models at the show and it also saw the return to South Africa of famous makes such as Husqvarna and Moto Guzzi, while the newly-arrived top models in the Italian Benelli range were showcased by distributors Puzey Motorcycle Corporation.

There was also a major focus on scooters as this is proving a sales growth area with immense potential in a developing country such as South Africa.

A motorcycle and two scooters were won by visitors to the show as prizes on competitions. The winner of the KTM Duke 125 was Lance Schouw, of Germiston, while the Big Boy Pulse 150 scooters were won by Meagan Carroll and Simba Mhoyo.

There is a wonderful opportunity for those unable to attend the 2012 AMiD show to see what they missed. Gerald Ferreira ([email protected]) of Car Site has made an amazing 3D virtual tour of all the displays which you can see at:

 https://old.carsite.co.za/johannesburg-motorcycle-show-3d-virtual-tour/

The tour is fairly long and in great deal. It is possible to go backwards, forwards or stop with a click of your mouse. You can make the screen bigger and by clicking on the index you will be taken to that particular make of motorcycle or scooter.

There are some very interesting facts and figures about the making of this very realistic virtual tour:

  • It took 72 hours to create
  •  It consists of 150 scenes. Creating each scene required between 12 and 24 images.
  • In total Gerald took 3 200 individual photographs to create the video.
  •   In addition to the photographs of the virtual tour a further 1 176 images were taken of the motorcycles on display. These images are available within the virtual tour if you click on a motorcycle to get more details of the specific machine.
  • This was the first virtual tour to be made of an AMiD motorcycle show in South Africa.
