GEM Motoring Assist, road safety organisation and breakdown cover company, is celebrating the success of its Blue Light Aware video as it exceeds 100,000 views on YouTube, making it one of the most watched road safety videos.

Recently aired on ITV as part of a feature program, ‘Too Scared to Speed’, ‘Blue Light Aware’ provides road-users with vital information to help an emergency service driver on a ‘blue light’ run. Based on Highway Code advice, the video specifically addresses situations that can cause confusion or panic for motorists.

Backed by overwhelming support, the five-minute video features emergency service representatives and road safety professionals talking through scenarios and explaining how motorists should deal with them. The aim of the video is to ensure that ‘blue light’ drivers, on their way to attend emergency situations, can get there as safely and quickly as possible, with the help of fully-informed motorists.

David Williams MBE, CEO of GEM Motoring Assist, spearheaded the project and comments: “We know road users only want to help emergency service drivers, yet it can sometimes be difficult to know the best way to do so. This lack of clarity means that many members of the public are putting themselves in danger, breaking the law, or risking damage to their cars while trying to assist an emergency vehicle on a ‘blue light’ run.

“We created ‘Blue Light Aware’ because we felt something needed to be done about this. Reducing doubt and confusion for motorists will help ensure they are at less of a risk from an accident and also allow the emergency services to continue their journey with as few hazards as possible.

“We believe the video successfully bridges the understanding between motorists and emergency services and, in turn, we hope this may help save lives,” David concludes.

Supporters of the video include the Association of Chief Police Officers, the Chief Fire Officers Association, the Driving Standards Agency, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, RoadSafe, the Motor Schools Association and the Institute of Advanced Motorists.
