The 59 members of the Jury voted in the first round of the election of European Car of the Year 2009 to select the finalists. From the 37 contenders for the award they nominated seven cars for the short list: Alfa Romeo MiTo, Citroën C5, Ford Fiesta, Opel/Vauxhall Insignia, Renault Mégane, Skoda Superb and Volkswagen Golf. For the final vote, Jury members have to apportion 25 points among at least five of the cars, providing a written justification of their choice. The result will be announced on November 17th, 2008.
A truly international contest, the European Car of the Year Jury consists of 59 members, representing 23 European countries. National representation on the Jury is related to the size of the country’s car market and its importance in car manufacturing. France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy and Spain each have six members; other countries, proportionally fewer.
